As to who can claim victory? I will state this plainly. Any participant who desired and contributed in the eventual destruction of Nazi Germany's capacity to resist. From the partisans to the front line combatants, to the rear echelon forces, to the factory workers churning out tanks, planes, beans, bullets and bandages in the industrial complex back home. Whole picture? They all claim victory.
If you are interested in a discussion of who contributed the most to that victory through combat arms and destruction of German forces in battle, clearly the answer is the Soviets. They were then and remain today a formidable force to contend with on the battlefield. To diminish their legacy by degenerating their past battlefield prowess is stupid and frankly dangerous. The breadth of those military studies demonstrates our military's continued interest in learning from them and preparing to one day, if so required to defeat them.

Let me make this easy here, I’m pretty sure we can all agree that the world would have been a very different place had it not been for several countries uniting to defeat the Nazi’s, period. There was no clear one country won the war. With that said, it’s also pretty clear that if America had not come to aid those other countries they would have ultimately been defeated. Make Germany fight on multi fronts and keeping them distracted allowed for key things to happen which eventually led to Nazi defeat. It wasn’t one country. If Russia hadnt played their role then the US wouldn’t have been able to play theirs and the world would have been a very different place. If you will indulge me (and sorry for the double post) this is where we get in trouble. Actually COVID is more deadly than the typical flu. But the typical flu is so harmless, thats a pretty low bar. You are fighting such a low number. However, my father who has experienced much more than me, pointed out in the 50s, the "Hong Kong" flu impacted America as bad or worse than COVID, and we just soldiered on. (Not to mention the Asian or Swine Flu of the 70s). Especially since COVID nails the elderly, in the 50s we just didn't have an elderly population as the all died from that whole 'life' thing. People didn't live to be 80.
Now in fairness, if 99.9% of people survive normal flu, but if 99.8% of people survive COVID, you can actually argue both ways (Which is really where we are right now). COVID is more dealy than the acutal flu (I made the above numbers up, but they are pretty close), and for anyone under 70, its a statistical blip, even if it were twice or 10X more deadly than the flu. Therein lies the problem. Its like saying "I walk faster than a 90 year old" Pretty much everything walks faster than a 90 year old. SO yes COVID is more deadly than the flu.
You still have a 99%+ chance of surviving. THAT is the message.

In the examples people give, I'll add one. If an unknown assailant is trying to break through the driver side window, while the cop is sitting there, should he get out of the car at somebody down ask a bunch of questions or should he eliminate the threat.
It was a clean shoot, she's deserve to die for her actions the only reason people care is cuz she's a pretty white girl that served our country that supports Trump...
