The case is actually an amazing read reference executive, legislative, military, and judicial powers/roles on US soil during exigent times of "insurrection", which at the time of the incident was our Civil War, amd whether military tribunal courts could dole out punishment, deny trial by jury, etc against ordinary, non-military US citizens in states not directly affected by the war activities (like Indiana where Mr. Milligan was arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to death by military tribunal... later released by order of the Circuit Courts of Indiana on Jan 2 1865 after a grand jury did not return charges against Milligan).
