Hello folks, I have been out of shooting for a few years and trying to get back into it. I am trying to do some research for a mid level SPR. Trying to shake old knowledge for what brands are good/bad, better to build/buy a whole rifle.

If I build I am thinking some sort of m16a4 stock rifle, swap the barrel and hand guard. Is that a good route for a decent set up, or build from the ground up/buy like a bcm rifle? Trying to be under 1500 ideally

If you're looking to recreate a Mk12, PRI is a good place to start, though it'll eat through your budget with the upper alone.

The other more modern options will be more cost effective - but sometimes it's less about what's best and more about following your heart.

What are you trying to accomplish with it, does it have a role you need filled, or is just a clone? Largely doesn't matter, your guns and money.

Crane gave the moniker Special Purpose Rifle largely because military programs need an acronym 😂 but at the time there was not an accused 556 gas gun with match barrels or compatibility with what was the current gen of suppressors - the Ops Inc 12th Model primary, but a few others were out there on the teams and SMUs.

With the right barrel (Douglas in that case, but id put WOA, Centurion, Lilja, and other precision rifled barrels from blanks up there) it's a 1.5 MOA gun with shitty mil ammo in the right hands and even tighter with good 77gr match ammo.

It will absolutely kill a (slightly malnourished) human out to 800m and ring steel at 1KM, and even in an 18 it's wieldy enough. That said times have changed and you can do much better than a PRI tube and OpsInc/AEM5/OCM5.

Grab a good barrel or a built PRI or Seekins, put on decent glass, and whatever stock you want. My "Mod Syria" take on the Mk12 Mod H uses a CTR instead of a fixed stock. No need to handicap yourself or pigeonhole yourself unless you want a 1:1 clone which will be super spendy finding the right ARMS and swan neck

I just picked up a Seekins DMR. Haven’t taken it out shooting yet, but it’s a fine rifle just like its bigger brother the SP10. Waiting on a scope for it and will head out to shoot it in a week or so.

I guess the big question is what do you want to do with it? Range queen etc

Here is my.spr build

First I didn't start off to do an spr. I found a brownells lower on sale cheap with no idea what to do

A few months later I decided to make a coyote rifle. I bought an A2 fixed stock with buffer etc. Cheap lower parts kit an aftermarket trigger cmc.

I wanted a 20 in for velocity but all they had was an 18 so I put on a bear creek 18 223 wild upper with free float handguard. I had an old leupold vx2 3-9 x40 I threw on there. It's accurate enough for what I do.

Fast forward a year and it occurred to me one day I had built an SPR without realizing it.

In short figure out what you want to do with it before building it. Want a clone then go for it.
