Bighorn Origin Build Thread

Latest Origin build. This will serve as a backup PRS rifle in 6.5 creedmoor. The barrel is a Bartlein blank 5R Heavy Varmint 1:8 twist chambered by KI Precision. So far I'm super happy with a random load I picked to get some rounds down the barrel before load development starts.

I did a quick barrel break in with 5 rounds to get the scope dialed in and then shot two 5-shot groups. The left one was the first and the right one was the first. This was a random load with an old box of Hornady 140 AMAX bullets I had laying around. It's looking pretty good so far. Shout out to Kurt Ives at KI Precision!

Kurt definitely turns out some awesome stuff

I haven’t had him spin me up anything yet since he isn’t doing shouldered barrels for the TL3 but he’s a solid dude. He’s semi local to me, so I’ve got to shoot a few matches with him and his supported shooters.
Agreed. I shoot matches at MKM and am also a member there so I see him and his guys there quite a bit. He’s doing a custom cerakote job on another Matrix Pro for me right now.

Sweet rifle! Details on the awesome coffee table!
It's a 4.8/5.3 LS block a buddy had sitting around. I had it sandblasted and painted it myself. The rods/pistons are actually from a 3.8 Buick. (I'd had preferred to jse the original rods, but none to be found)

Used main bolts to attach the pistons to the cyl deck, and cap screws to the bottom. Masked and painted it myself.
I have some cheap LED lights that flash in the bores that looks pretty sweet (cheesy). Guests get a kick out of it.
Wife isn't so sure.

Hello Guys. I'm thinking of taking the Origin pathway after many enjoyable years of running Savage actions. I do all of my own barrel fits etc but I have never actually used a Savage as a basis for an interchangeable barrel type rifle, just easier to get another action! The Origin is a big step up in investment for me and I'm thinking I'll definitely interchange barrels.

For those of you with modest means and the capability, have you actually used your Origin (or other modestly priced custom) with multiple barrels? Thoughts? Thanks.

Origin was the easy button for me since I already have 2 Savage rifles and 4 barrels, also living 10mi away from Zermatt Arms doesn't hurt. I've since picked up 2 shouldered prefits. The Origin is a marked improvement over the Savage!

I have 2 origins. 1 I have setup as my 223 comp rifle and have a 6 dasher barrel as a backup. The other has a 223ai barrel for prarie dog season, and a 6.5 cm proof carbon for big game season.

I don’t switch barrels every range session, I use it as a way to adjust the rifle to fit the use a few times a year.

That's part of the draw of the Origin. You can have multiple barrels/calibers all in one rifle in an action that . I have two TL3s and bought an Origin and a HLR recoil lug and I can use my TL3 barrels on my Origin now. Now I can make my Origin a 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, .223, 6mm ARC or .308 just by swapping the barrels and bolt face.

I shot and wrenched Savages for years. I got frustrated with parts availability and non-interchangeability. Bolt parts no longer made and springs/firing pin issues. Ran into issues with actions warped from heat treat. Preferred the older actions but ran into problems finding triggers that suited me. Stock fitment and options.

Bighorn Origin is a huge step up. And being able to use any old barrels on hand is a major plus, at least until the custom barrel bug bites. It can bite hard and deep lol.
And if things change or you don’t like it,,,, you can get most or all your money back. Holds value incredibly well.

It’s not perfect as a switch barrel, but on a modest budget it is prob the best option. I switch barrels all the time. Shouldered barrels ease the switch s little bit, but I swap between shouldered and barrel nut all the time. I now own three Origin actions

Do it. I have zero regrets about choosing the Origin a few years ago and it’s seen thousands of rounds and 4 barrels since I got it. Every barrel has been a prefit I spun on myself in my garage in like 10mins and that’s exactly how I was hoping it’d be.

Ray and Zermatt have been great with things I’ve picked up over the years as far as maintenance parts and answers to questions.

Hey thanks guys, very useful replies. I'm down in New Zealand so circumstances re "supply" of things like prefit barrels etc are different and take longer.

Barrel choice (or more like what you can get your hands on) is another reason why an Origin might make sense. You can use Origin shouldered prefits, TL3 prefits (if you buy an HLR lug), and small shank Savage thread anything with a barrel nut (which is as good or better than shouldered btw).
