Time pieces/Watches?

Summer days on the lake.

Was at my local AD for Tudor and Rolex while shopping for an anniversary gift for the wife. And got hopelessly distracted by the Tudor Pelagos and Rolex Submariner. There’s things I like about each. And now I’m torn between the two. Anybody ever own either or both of these?

The Dweller is a no go. The Pelagos is an easy purchase. The Sub would be double but I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around it being 2x the cost of the Pelagos. I like power reserve and in house movement of the Pelagos. But the knurling and clicks on the bezel don’t feel nearly as refined as on the Sub.

I like the new tech in the Pelagos a lot. Pretty much everything about it is very nice for the price. But there’s just something about the fit and finish of the sub that I can’t ignore. Tough call for me.

and I do actually dive. But my Perdix dive computer takes care of all those needs.

How does the Lume compare between your Pelagos and Sub?

I have a Sea Dweller and a Pelagos. Pelagos gets more wrist time, but the Rolex feels way more special. The Pelagos lume is excellent. The way I see it is this; the Pelagos is a very fine tool watch. A Rolex Sub or Sea Dweller is a very fine tool watch and an appreciating asset. I’d take a used full-set Rolex over a new Pelagos, but I think you’ll be happy with either. Best thing to do is to try them both on the wrist if you can. The Pelagos wears a lot bigger than the Sea Dweller 16600 - which in my opinion represents very good value on the used market.

Used is something I haven’t considered. Because I’m not knowledgeable enough on the model numbers or cases to determine what is authentic vs fake. Do ADs even sell used models?

I'm assuming that you're talking about Rolex ADs? Yes they do, now. Might as well buy new. They're just cashing in on what the gray market folks have been, not cheap, for now.

"Something about the fit and finish..." This is the "thing." I've had several other makes over the years but always come back to Rolex for fit and finish. And then, back to the SD over subs, GMT, and exp, just because. I missed my SD 16600 that I wore for over a decade (but said I was too old for) until I tried the new bracelet on the SD43. The current sub has the same just a bit smaller. Now I'm good, the watch doesn't care how old I am; (wife swears it's my death watch, one way or another) and I smile every time I put it on. You should get the one that gives you that.

1952 (I think) Rolex Oysterdate Precision 6266 I sent to Switzerland with basically a blank check to get working again. It looses a few hours a day unfortunately. Family heirloom so wanted to repair it. Unfortunately they sent it back to my dealer and said there was nothing they could do. Hard to believe but whatever.

Probably similiar to watches that POWs could buy while inside a stalag.

Geneva salesmen would show up and take orders with sales completed when they were released and got backpay.

Switzerland was neutral and capitalist.

Damn! Definitely not a POW in a Stalag as far as my FIL knows.

Send it to this guy. Wild shot but maybe it will work out.

Thanks for posting that…immensely satisfying to watch.

Heh, pun not intended, but now I’m sitting here chuckling at myself. Good God, I’m such a dork.

OT: getting some weird “Everything must go!” emails from Crown and Caliber lately, and when I browse their store, the selection is really limited. Are they going out of business?

I’m sort of in the market for the matching Tag Link Calibre 36 with the black face, to match mine that has the white face. It’s not my most expensive watch, but I absolutely love how that Link band feels vs. other stainless steel bands. I also like the fact that it has the Zenith El Primero movement…something that sets it apart from my other “nice” watches.

I’m very leery of eBay or other sites, but Crown and Caliber always seemed gtg…any other reputable sites I should consider? Edit: I’ve actually used Chrono24 once, but any others? They seem to primarily carry newer watches, and the one I’m looking for is 20 years old now.

Rolex doesn’t touch old stuff.

If you don’t get a response from Wristwatch revival let me know. I have a guy out in Oregon who is the best with these early watches. Has done a number of prewar and wartime Rolexes for me.

Pm me and I’ll introduce you guys via e-mail. Beautiful watch!!! Heirloom indeed!!!

Cheers! Sirhr

I’ve always had good luck on eBay but usually try and come tact the seller and meet in person for high end stuff. I don’t mind driving!!

Same with Chrono24. Majority of sellers are reputable dealers. So contact them and visit their storefront. Or meet in person .

I have a c2000 Tag Link I got new. Before Jason Bourne made them all spendy. Nice watch though I am not so much into quartz….. it’s a good timekeeper!

Oh and C&C was acquired in 2021 by Hodinkee for crazy money. And Hodinkee is now on the ropes. I think someone posted the article from either WSJ or FT above. It’s a fascinating story of over expansion, greed and a failure to read the market.

Here is the C&C letter announcing the takeover.

If the Hodinkee article is not here…. Someone should post it. It’s a good read!

Yup, and their doctrine is to restore to ‘as new’ condition, (If they have parts) which is an absolutely terrible idea for a vintage piece! There are some very talented independent watchmakers out there, good advice to take a personal recommendation.

I used Terry to service my Speedy and Pam last summer and he was phenomenal to work with. Great communication, quick turn around (for a service), easy instructions. The hardest part was finding the stupid tape to send them registered mail.

So I always wanted a WW2 German Hanhart but nice ones are very pricey. My wife bought me this for Christmas one year. About 12 or 14 years ago. It's a newer version but very nice and works awesome. Once you wind it to get it started and while you wear it, it will wind itself by the movement of your arm. That weight you see on the backside will move around as I understand it to wind the watch.

Today is a good sub day... bought new in 1989 or so. Better than my 401K....

That said, sent in for Rolex service and the motherfuckers replaced my hands with brand new... and so the whole gorgeous patina is gone. And now they look all wrong. So sending to Terry to refit 'old' hands. I can't tell you how pissed I am at Rolex for replacing my original hands. NO.... they didn't light up like they did in 1989. But they had perfect aging and those 'hands' had been around the world with me. Fucking Rolex service SUCKS!

Terry has a set of hands for me that will 'match' the originals. But Rolex can suck my fucking wankie for their unforgiveable bullshit policy of 'restoring to new' with utter disdain for historical importance.

Cheers,

Sirhr

PS. I don't bother to set the date any more. I mostly know what day of the month it is. And when I don't... I don't give a flying fuck!
