What can cause accuracy to fall apart at 700 yards?

I don't think it's his bullet choice unless something is really wonky, it's probably wind or mirage etc. He could always try 175gr federal ammo as a benchmark.

I used Factory Hornady #8105 which is what my handloads somewhat clones. I've found this factory load to be as every bit as accurate as FGMM in a variety of rifles.

Load data ?
Chrono data ?
Next range trip, stake out some wind flags / surveyor's marking tape near the 600 and 700 yard lines to see if there is a weird wind happening in the longer ranges.
No Mike, I'm using the 178 HPBT, no problems with accuracy until I go beyond 600. I think some of these guys are on to something, it maybe destabilizing even though it has plenty of velocity. I'm going to try some 168 ELDs to see how they fair. The BC is good enough to get out to 1K.

I might pick you up a box of 155s too just in case....
I have 2 rifles that hate the 178 BTHP’s at any distance and unfortunately I have a box of 1,600 of them..

I switched to 175 SMK’s and have no problem out to 800 while staying hypersonic. They don’t register on the shotmarker at 1,000 but they still ring the steel.

I will dispose of them for you, and I’ll even cover shipping! 😁

Hypersonic? At 800 yards? How long your barrel?

178s handloads, velocity is (memory is about 2520) not home at the moment. Factory 178s is the same velocity give or take about 30 fps. Shot at 850ish ASL in 75 degree weather.

Barrel is an 18 inch 1/10. The old barrel was a hammer out to 1K . No issues going transonic....

Barrel was 18 inches long, I replaced it with another 18 inch barrel. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to go out to 700 or beyond the last time out because of so many people at the range. I will try again when I am off through the week and report back. So far at 600 the new barrel was G2G.

I think you mean "supersonic".
Hypersonic is five times the speed of sound.

Well….a barrel swap took care of the problem. The LW probably would shoot at distance with another bullet but since I have so many 178s I let the tail wag the dog. I actually went with a cheaper barrel, I caught a SS nitride Armalite barrel on sale from CDNN for under $200 a couple of weeks ago. I went out the first time and I could only get to 600 because the range was so crowded. Today I started at 600 and worked out to 1k. My DOPE was 1/4 MOA (MOA guy here) higher than the previous barrel, probably because it’s new and slightly faster. It was stacking rounds at 800 when the wind cooperated. At 1K I was shooting about 1.5- 2 MOA just judging through the scope. I didn’t go down range to see because a couple of other guys had just set up and started shooting as I was packing up.

Thanks for the conclusion. You're abbreviating Lothar-Walther with LW, right? And that barrel doesn't have many rounds on it per your first post. Do you think you just got a lemon from them?

Correct, it’s an Lothar Walther….the barrel isn’t bad because I didn’t do any load development with it. I just used the loads from a previous LW barrel from ‘06 and it was shooting in the .7s. I’m sure I could have tightened things up if I tried. I think it just didn’t love this bullet like the previous barrel. The previous barrel with the 178 hpbt bullet was amazing….
