I'm in the process of putting together a .223 AI "trainer" / "backup" gun for PRS - ARC CDG action, PVA 26" 1:7 barrel. What bullet should I be looking at? Ultimately, price matters as this gun is supposed to be a less expensive with longer barrel life vs. my 6GT competition gun. 77 gr SMK looks like a quality bullet at a good price pint. Any other thoughts?

Lots of info in the 223 Ackley thread.

This.

But also:

Berger 80’s
Varget 26.1
2868fps
COAL 2.427”

I have done a few 223AI. It will shoot 50gr Blitzkings and 80gr Berger's great. I shot steel out to 1200yds this week. It worked well out to 1040yds , but went subsonic at 1200yds it is a super little round.

Best luck I've had is with 80 grain VLD, 80 grain Fullbore, and 82 grain HPBT. I stuck with Varget, CCI 450, and Lapua Brass in mine. 26" Bartlein 4G 1-7. LRI throated mine at .075" so it doesn't have long throat.

I shoot the 80 VLD jammed .010" and the other 2 jumped .020".
I shoot the 80 gr VLD at -0.006" off the lands, 2850 fps at the muzzle. I'd have to go look up the load.

About 3 weeks ago, I moved a target to the other side of one of my ponds making it about 700 yards away. It's where I see coyotes fairly often. there is a den nearby. I was working on getting a hit to find the DOPE for that spot. What I didn't take into account is that where I moved that target to, up on the bank of a shale pile, is the power lines between me and there. By line of sight, I was under them. But on shot number 3, I hit that line and broke it in half.

It was sort of weird...about a half second after the shot, I heard the fuse on the transformer about a half mile away blow. Those are pretty loud, if you have never heard one go. I was just thinking, what the heck was that when I noticed the rest of the lines shaking like crazy and then I heard my neighbors backup generator kick on. I'm off-grid so no big deal for us and my neighbor is the only house off that transformer.

Well, fuck. Add that to the very long "shit to never try again" list

I called the power company and they came right out and made the repair and I promised to move that target and not shoot at that area of the shale bank from my bench anymore.

75gr BTHPs are hard to best for cost effectiveness, they shoot the exact same load (powder, seating depth setting, etc) as the 73gr ELD-Ms, to the same POA, just the 73s are 30fps faster.
Makes it easy to run both a cheap bulk bullet for training, and a better match bullet for hunting/match use.
