Custom 300 WM build

So many options.

What is the weight goal for that hunting rifle?

I did a 7RM for my brother on an Origin with a 5.5 contour Krieger at 24". In a Grayboe Terrain (not my favorite) with pirated old 700 bottom metal it came in at about 11.5 lbs with optic.

Hunting rig:
Any 700 clone or the R700 tuned up
Do not use DBM. You will save some weight, reduce noise while walking, won't ever unseat the mag on brush, won't ever forget the magazine back home. BDL type or ADL.
Go with the real long Wyatts internal magazine box.
Brux, Bartlein, Kreiger, no particular order. 9 to 10 twist. 26" long finished, threaded for brake or suppressor.
Decide which bullet to use, I like the 210 Berger VLD. Load up some dummy rounds that just barely fit that magazine. Take them to the barrel cutter and tell him you want the ogive to barely touch the lands.
Buy 250 cases, 1000 bullets, 1000 primers and enough H1000 to load 1000 rounds.

I find it a super versatile cartridge - with the correct throat. Could be a hot 308 or a light RUM depending on how you load it - from 150 class zingers to 200+ class heavy hitters, and even long range solids (with a higher twist rate).

You can find 300WINMAG in the smallest of Alaskan villages. Probably not 300PRC or 30 Nosler or 300RUM. 300WINMAG is a great choice for a hunting rig simply because it is so widely available.
You could just pack your ammo in the same case as your rifle so it doesn’t get forgotten… still a big fan of the 300 winny for hunting though

Something like this? Greyboe outlander is only 33oz. The rifle has a #5 contour, so the barrel is a little on the heavry side. It weighs 175oz with bipod sling and a full magazine. I proabaly could have saved another pound or two with a sporter weight barrel. I coukd save a few OZ on the one peice nightforcs base. The scope is 15oz and I think the bipod is around 10oz.

Yeah...I wasn't thinking of forgetting the ammo. My point was that ammo can be found almost anywhere center fire ammo is sold.

I had a buddy drive to elk camp after he got off work on a Friday. A good 5.5 hour drive from Lewiston, ID. He arrives late, we all hear him. We tell him the time we had decided to wake up and get moving and will discuss the plan when we do. Back to sleep. Wake up, coffee, bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, toast and layout our plan. Gather packs, other gear and rifles and he says, "oh no" He had ammo but no magazine. He hunted that morning planning to single load but later drove back to Lewiston and then back to camp that same day. That spring he had a new stock and that rifle became a BDL.

That is a very good point for benefit of a BDL or ADL for sure

300WM is my favorite caliber for an all-arounder. I've built a few on Stiller actions and don't love the binding of the actions - or maybe it was just the 2 I had.
Remington has cleaned up their actions quite a bit, or so my smith tells me - so that is not a bad choice. If you want features not native to an R700, I am a fan of Tikka actions, but mileage varies. Pick an action that has a healthy aftermarket offering - or just R700 clone...
I heartily agree with the "pick the ammo first" approach.
DBM is preference, stock is too. For multiple reasons, I am slowly transitioning from conventional rifle stocks to chassis - just so much more versatility.
Next advice was gonna be "get a can", then I looked at your location and am changing my advice: fucking move, Texas maybe.

Carry on.

This is my hunting 300WINMAG. It's proven itself many times and I love it. If I were to start over, no DBM. I may end up changing it out but it works good now and I hate to fix it if it ain't broke.

Here is the other 300WINMAG I have. It's really too heavy to actually hunt with but I take it out bear hunting. The way my brother and I hunt bear is to go where there are bears, find a place where we can see a whole lot of country, park the lawn chairs beside the coolers and glass, glass, glass. Most shots are over 500 yards, this rifle is perfect for that.
Both of these rifles were built by Charley Robertson at ScoreHi in Albuquerque, NM. I asked him to cut the chambers as close to being exactly the same as he could. Both have 28" barrels. My goal was to be able to use ammo interchangeably. It worked. I don't have to worry about which ammo is used in either rifle. This one has pretty much only shot 210 Berger Target while the other one has primarily only shot 210 Berger Hunting. But the zero does not change at all if I swap to the "other" ammo.

The 300WINMAG is extremely versatile and your buddy won't regret going that route.

Here is the 280 Ackley beside the 300WINMAG light.
