I have a 20 moa base which I think gives me 5.8 mils, 10 mils of holdover in my reticle and 18.8 mils left on my turret does that mean I have 34.6 (i.e. 5.8 + 10 + 18.8 ) of elevation to work with or does it not work that way? tia

You won't know how much elevation you have until you zero your scope. In theory you could take you scopes advertised total travel and divide that by two, then add 5.8.

So if you scope had 25 mils... The math would be 25 mils divided by 2 = 12.5 mils up, plus 5.8 mils = 18.3 mils. That would be a good estimate of how much travel you have in the turrets. Plus whatever you can hold over on the reticle. The process of zeroing the scope might further add or subtract turret elevation. Hope this helps.

thanks, that makes sense. I remeasured and I have 18.2 mils of elevation left on my turret with a 100 yd zero; so I can't add in the base because it's already in my zero. so I really have 28.2 (18.2+10). if i need more elevation I'll have to get a mount with additional elevation, correct? fwiw the scope claims 30 mils elevation.
