I have three pits right now. I have owned, fostered and/or worked with 20+ of them over my life.
They are all individuals.
Some I could trust, some I couldn't. Some could go to the public dog park, some never got let off a leash or allowed around other dogs without a muzzle. Almost all of them would kill any nuisance animal that got in the yard.
They are actually great dogs IMO, but to say they don't have a tendency to be more dominate and animal aggressive, would be just ignorant. I persoanlly haven't ran into many human aggressive ones that didn't have a history of abuse or neglect. I don't think that behavior should be tried to be rehabilitated with these dogs. Too much liability.
They weren't bred to be human aggressive, as they still had to be handled before and after being rolled (faught), or when being used to hunt game. All of the ghetto breeding doesn't help though.
As others have said, they are just super athletic and once they are determined to do something, there is little you can do to stop them. "Gameness" is a real thing, and some pits excel at it.
At the same time, "Pit bull" is a name for every version of ghetto bred mutt that has a big head and short fur. That's why the bite stats are so high for them. And also because of the people who generally own and neglect them.
I can see why people hate them. I can see why people love them.
