So I spotted this for sale and it caught my eye but some things are really confusing. It's a Yugo K98 but someone seemed to went to some trouble to try and pass it off as a real sniper rifle.

So the first thing that caught my eye was the split ring side mount. That just isn't correct in my opinion. Now that normally doesn't matter since I'm more interested in a shooter anyways.

The side mount had markings that appear to be peened for some reason? Not sure why if it's a reproduction mount?

Scope is period correct at least with the serial number putting it in the proper era

Yugo markings

Serial number of rifle is U6911, now U Block serial numbers are generally a good sign for a real sniper rifle

Bolt serial number matches

Bottom metal serial number does not. Not a big deal.

I know nothing about the extended safeties on K98 rifles. This has the serial number for the rifle but I don't know if it was stamped to give more authenticity?

The seller is asking $3500 Canadian for the rifle, about $2600 USD for it. He has never shot it so can't confirm how it shoots. I just can't tell if it was a real K98 sniper rifle at one point with a reproduction mount or if it's just a fake.

K98kforum is probably the place you would most likely want to ask. Also the k98k books by Bruce karem and Michael Steves has the info. I don't own any of them to help. Heard about them listening to the milsurp hq podcast.

A friend of mine was taken for a ride on something similar a few years ago. He asked me to sight it in for him, I also took I by a military appraiser and expert, turns out post war there was a guy in Austria doing a very good job of cloning them.

This is not even a fake. It's a clone.
With a Yugo M98 as the base rifle this is a $500 rifle in Norway as shown as the only thing of value is the scope, if it is legit. Mount is probably east European. Accumount in USA also make split ring side mounts.
A Yugo M98 cost $100 in Norway.

God I wish! A Yugo/Russian capture K98 will run about $1100 here

My bet is that it's a fake by Mitchell's Mausers. Can you get the seller to send a picture of the import stamp? If it's a Mitchell's it'll be something like 'MM CA'

I with others, I don't think this is original at all. It's priced as a collectors item, so it's severely overpriced as a shooter. Just my opinion.

Yep, looks very much like one.

I just can't tell if it was a real K98 sniper rifle at one point

I'd say that would be highly unlikely - here's one reference point regarding Mitchell's Mausers "sniper" rifle:
