"Lonesome Dove"
Texas Monthly magazine referred to it as The Anthem of Texas. Scenes in the series are based on historical facts surrounding Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving. During the Civil War longhorn cattle were feral, in most parts of Texas. Goodnight rounded them up and drove them to market. Often 2000 head, or greater. Loving joined Goodnight later in the quest.
There was a black cowboy Goodnight trusted completely. Goodnight would have the black cowboy carry the gold payment on his way back to Weatherford, TX. No white raider would ever suspect a black man would be entrusted with the gold. Deets was this character in "Lonesome Dove".
There really was a fight with the Comanches in the Pecos river. There really was a cowboy that set out on foot, to seek help. Oliver Loving was found and carried to Ft.Sumner. That would be the character Agustus McCray. One of the finest characters to ever bless us with his presence on screen. Played by Rodert Duvall.
Loving requested that he not be allowed to remain in a foreign land (New Mexico). Goodnight did vow to haul him back to Texas, and he did.
Seventh grade Texas school students spend two semesters on Texas History. Most of us do not care much as 12 years old. That would have been 1991 and 1992 for me. I took it upon myself to study Texas History again, beginning in 2008. By many Texans opinion the official history book of Texas is "Lone Star A History of Texas and the Texans". I would say it was equivalent to tackling the King James Bible.
"Charles Goodnight Cowman and Plainsman" is quite a good book.
"Empire of the Summer Moon" is quite a good book. The history of the Comanches in Texas
