Maybe Trump will work to deregulate that crap!!!

So simple and I would for sure own a bare bones model Hilux.

I prefer a basic rig that is reliable.

My last truck purchase I was appalled I couldn't find anything with crank windows.
Granted, I drive the wheels off, so my last rig was old…

Half tempted to buy a 1st gen 4 runner or toyota truck with the sr22 and just rebuild as needed.
OK, more like 3/4 tempted……

First new vehicle I bought was an entry level, no A/C, 87 Toyota truck with the basic 22R. Granted that I'm a stickler for maintenance but I drove that truck 375,000 miles and it started every time I turned the key. Drove it to Costa Rica and back and everybody kept trying to buy it. ?Se vende?

I’d have a Tacoma/Hilux diesel in a heartbeat! If you wanna go down the rabbit hole of swaps there’s a few builds on tacomaworld.com. Think one was a 3.9 Cummins, one or two TDI’s. Diesel Toys offers a Toyota diesel swap but it’s more than a good used truck then you add the actual engine cost on top of that. I’d kill for a 2.0-2.5L turbo diesel in my 2nd gen. Don’t have the time or funds now but at some point I really wanna jump into a swap. Probably gain some good low end torque and several mpg, but honestly the thought of an all analog/mechanical diesel with no bullshit sensors etc is my main motivation. My first truck was an old GMC with a 6.2, only wiring was for glow plugs, starter and creature comforts!

You gonna ask the tarriff king to remove a tarriff? Don’t hold your breath lol

one of my many hates for the current system. i don't want any of the modern computer crap on a vehicle: air bags, gps, rear camera, cell phone shit, seat heaters, push button start etc, etc. when getting a new vehicle, you HAVE to buy all that. have no choice as most of it is (i believe) mandated by some gov agency. the last stripped down model i owned was a 1st year isuzu rodeo in like 90 (?). it was fine. for those who did minor engine work on their own back in the day? forget it. even many local garages struggle with the newest models. many have to go to the dealer for work at hugely inflated costs. the digital and sensor problems are legion and usually can't be fixed at any but huge $.
IMHO this is all an example of gov overreach, american obsession with "saftey" and convenience, laziness and just having to have the very latest things. definitely applies to comps and, yes, shooting sports as well.

More the issue of regulations his admin could cut.

Im not sure how many Toyotas are imported now vs just built here.
Tariff cant be that bad on the basic vehicle imports.

Plus, his main tariff target is Chyna.
Not Japan.

Spitballing here and seems part of the current tariff on these is because the pussies at the EPA dont want good Americans having a bomb proof truck.
And the DOJ pussies dont want us having a bomb proof truck that makes a good technical…..

Tariffs on trucks is very high. 40% if I recall correctly. ‘Chicken tax’. Certain countries may have an exception, but that’s why the Volkswagen Amarok is not imported to the US.

Their is currently a 25% tax on foreign made trucks. It’s called the chicken tax

Well.
around here, high % of truck buyers are conservative.

Hmmm... You sure you don't just live in a lesbian neighborhood? They all drive trucks.

Seriously though - I looked at this and the 25 year thing was correct when I looked at it. I got connected to a guy in Colorado by the Land Cruiser Museum in Salt Lake City (Go there if you like cool old cruisers!) You can bring in newer models for "exhibition" purposes which means your ability to drive them on the street is severely limited.

I get the same type of solicitations with my First Gen Dodge Cummins almost every time I stop to fuel up, it gets old actually because people think (well I have no idea what people are thinking when they say that and then you give them the price and they walk away)
Did they really think they were gonna get a deal, when there's no For Sale sign on it to begin with ?

Me too.
Current all the time truck unless I am towing with the Cummins is an 03 Tacoma. Before that an 85 FJ60. They are hard to kill.

All of you gushing over a fucking Hilux... If that piece of shit is your greatest dream then how bad are the US market trucks? 😳

Had one as a loan truck while mine was in the body shop.
Noise, underpowered engine (and from what I hear, not particularly reliable), transmission that seemed to forget what it was doing mid shift, suspension is crap, body is made spit and tin foil (the whole door deformed when operating the window). I have shampoo bottles with nicer plastic than the interior.

This was a 2023 with like 2000 miles on it when I got the keys.

Don't know if any model of vehicle clinging so firmly on to the name of it's ancestor, yet does nothing as well as the old ones (pre-2000)

Only modern truck I've driven that was worse is the Mitsubishi L200.

Couldn't Trump just get rid of CAFE entirely and then Toyota could make em here? A basic bitch Hilux for 15K would sell like hotcakes. A 20K to 25K deluxe version would still still be a steal compared to what Detroit is currently putting out.

Take a look at the double cab cruiser in burts post above. Great pickup truck. Grear drive tcase. Axles you can beat on with those size tires in far rougher terrain than 95% of the population will ever traverse. Locking diffs front and rear. And a manual tranny. And made in Japan, by people who aren't idiots. It's basically what the Rubicon truck should be but Chrysler fucked it up with shitty most things.feels like a giant shit box.

Ford was close with the 6.2 raptor. They forgot the manual tranny. A d60 front and 10.5 rear. And a bare bones interior. If America would put descent running gear in a half ton size truck that you could beat on it would be perfect. The 3/4 ton class is just too big and heavy. 120" wheelbase be perfect. Also it needs to be engineered to be fixable and not assembled by retards.

Let’s get rid of CAFE that has ruined all the suvs too. Turned them into suv body on shitbox car frames.

Square Bodys are hotter than that new hilux anyway

Those land cruisers are a heap of seriously overpriced pieces of shit.
You have to get the luxury model to get power windows, the centre console cup holders look like an after-market third-party job, and yes they are just screwed to the transmission tunnel. Gutless as fuck, handles like a tank, the seats are like sitting on plyboard, and in the single cab versions, you have zero legroom for someone who's 6'1" as the cab is so short you can't put the seat back, let alone tilt the back enough to be comfortable.
In the modern 4WD and all their luxuries, the 70 series family of cruisers belongs in the 70s with their absolute budget-built standard options. I think you still have to request to have AC as a factory option.

And as far as the Hiluxes go, stick with your "yank tanks" that you have over there already, as they are way better than the crappy hilux. Mass-produced, underpowered, gearbox issues to boot, shit suspension, plastic fantastic interior. The hilux I drove at my last job, I got it brand new and it only took 1 year and 60,000Km for the timing belt to make wicked noises that Toyota didn't want to know about fixing until the company forced them to have a look at it.
2 of the hiluxes I had at the job before that one, were also near new and had mad gearbox issues always dropping out of gear or not knowing which gear to select when speeding it. They ended up needing to go back to toyota to have the transmission ECU reporgrammed.

You are the very reason 4x4s are ruined worldwide.

Need ac roll the manual windows down.
To cold to have the windows down. Should have dressed warmer.

Oh the cup holders. You know it's possible to drive a manual while holding a drink.

The floor is plastic. So you can wash it out.

Oh it rides rough.

You disgust me.

I for one am tired of all the new whizz bang bs in new vehicles. I’d rather drive 2000s stuff than the new suv the wife has.

1990-2010 ish was peak vehicles.

Those Mfers just add more and more bs now .gov is mandating buzzers for when rear passengers aren’t wearing seat belts. And a while back they mandate soon that all cars need pedestrian avoidance systems. How about gtfo out the road

F ing .gov / women voters ruin everything

Me and my dad have talked about that for years. He says when the general population decided they “needed” a truck and began daily driving them, trucks as us farm boys knew them ceased to exist! Creature comforts add weight and complexity to something that was meant to do work. Hell the “work truck” models now have more shit on them than they should, again because most are being used by a company for people to just get to and from job sites in. Same shit happened to sports cars in the late 80s. Doctors and lawyers started buying them so they became heavier with fancy interiors, ac, cruise control etc and no longer tried to kill you due to the traction and stability systems. No such thing as pure truck or sports car anymore! I’m just old enough to have experienced the good stuff, so am well within my right to bitch about it 😂

This x1000

While I might argue that airbags are a worthwhile (espeically front), there is so much "shit" on cars these days. Yes I'm one of those idiots that drives a big truck. What I wanted was an old 1970s style, no back seat, has a heater and a motor. That doesn't exist nowadays. All those extra sensors and that big touch screen--wtf thats just making someone money and its not me (plus when it breaks and IT WILL BREAK) its a shit-ton to repair.

Old enough to remember when automatic windows were a luxury Grandpa had. Find a car without auto windows. Or a tire sensor. What about all these kids starting out who need a cheap vehicle--you can't get a decent basic car any more. And don't even get me started on Jeeps without manual transmission!

Not to mention backup cameras totally screw with your spatial awareness. As dad said--Its a chance to get your arm around your girl (heh)

One of my crazy ideas: Build a basic car no frills and sell it. Hell I can afford an overpriced, truck but I HATE OVERSPENDING. I didn't even get 4 wheel drive (yeah crazy I know). Since 99% of my driving in on concrete or dry ground (towing, moving junk, pimpin).

Also bring back brights on the floor. You know its better.
