Now that Hunting Season is over, Just wanted a hunting recap!

Hilarious vid. Hard to believe that anybody could hunt before the advent of full coverage camo. Deer must have been dumber then. lol

One of my hunting mentors (Sam) and I stood in red Johnson wool mills jackets and green Johnson pants... in the middle of a herd of 20 doe one time. Just standing there. Does as close as 20 feet away. We just stood still and didn't move. Hoping for a buck. No bucks. Does wandered off. Sam was an ice cube around deer. I was just following his lead. Didn't move. Amazing moment.

Sam was the best sniper instructor in the history of sniper instructors. And didn't even know it. He died this year. I could not bring myself to go to his funeral because I hate funerals. Visited his grave after...

Those that purport to know believe that- before the invention of missile weapons, primitive humans could just about walk up and touch some “prey animals” like deer.

Dodo birds were hunted to extinction, not so much because they were “dumb,” but because they evolved in an environment with no predators. They lost all fear of predation and as a result were easy picking for the humans a domestic animals (dogs and cats) they brought with them.

Humans evolved as “persistence hunters.” Our adaptations to long distance running (ie, ability to sweat) allowed us to literally run prey animals to death. Native Americans were documented to do just that with wild turkeys. They just ran them until the birds couldn’t run anymore and then clubbed them.

I never knew of this series of videos made by Jim Varney until I was watching a vid by someone else who fondly remembered these.

Here is the first one.

In Texas, rifle hunting season on public land is from the first Saturday in November to the first Sunday in January. Archery season starts before that, however. And yeah, in Texas, you could be hunting deer in just a shirt and pants. They still move down here. And not always at the crack of dawn, either.
