22 ARC gas gun success.

Who here has had luck on a 22 arc build and what was your recipe? I tried to cheap out against my better judgement with a ballistic advantage 18” fluted barrel and brownells type 2 bolt.
After break in, I tried 3 different ammo types, 3 suppressors and bare muzzle, gas shut off and two scopes. The best 5 shot group I’ve had was .8”@100 yards and that wasn’t repeatable. Average group size was 3” with mostly vertical stringing. These groups were shot after letting the barrel cool to ambient temperature.
At the same time, I was alternating with shooting my 6.5 cm gas gun that had an average group size of .8” with 4 different types of ammo, so I don’t believe that this is a shooter issue.

I have had good luck with the Craddock RTR 22 arc barrel.

I’ve got craddock barrels in 22arc, 6arc, and 6.5 creed. They all shoot phenomenal.
The 6.5 creed is a bartlein and the arc’s are whatever they use in the rtr line

You have checked barrel nut tension? And barrel fitment, right?

The book max/col with cfe223, lever, or TAC and 75eldms shoot better than I can.

I did check the barrel nut tension, I didn’t pull the nut all the way off to check fitment. It looked right during assembly, but it’s probably worth double checking.

I'm going to be amazed if it's the barrel. Machining is so good now that a 3 moa barrel is harder to find than a .5 moa barrel. Take it all apart and put it back together, my bet is that something is loose. Remount that optic entirely, pull the barrel and re-mount it, make sure there isn't something touching the barrel under the handguard, make sure your gas system is locked in and your gas block is functioning correctly..

Understood. The three I've had in my possession shot well under a minute. It's effortless to make a sub-moa barrel these days.

I have had two of them in 223, both of them occasionally I could get under moa but not very often and not consistent at all.

Now I have seen a good handful in 6.5 CM that seem to shoot very well.

The very first thing I would check is the gas block clearance in the handguard. Some barrels whip like mad and even when it looks like there's clearance, it's not enough. One way to proof this would be to remove your handguard, paint the bottom and top portion of your gas block with a paint marker or something that will run off easily when contact is made, and then veeerrrryyyy carefully reinstall your handguard ensuring it doesnt touch the gas block during install. Then shoot a couple of groups and check for paint on the inside of the handguard.

Oddly enough, the first 2 6arc guns I built, one had a proof and the other had BA. The BA outshot the proof with all of the factory offerings and it wasn’t stellar either.

ETA: I’m not endorsing BA barrels. I was planning to buy 2 proofs but at the time I could only find the one in stock. The BA was just a placeholder until I found something else.

Thinking about another gasser project. It’ll be a 20in, either a 22ARC or a 6ARC - haven’t decided yet.
The cheap BAs and Faxons are rifle length at 20in but the Proof is +1 which would make sense. I’m not sure I want to pony up 1000$ for a Proof CW until I get a better feel of the caliber. I’ve also read the 22ARC is more sensitive and harder to tune than the 6 ARC. If I went rifle length gas, would doing a AGB helps?
Range would be inside 600 yards, mostly 2-3 mos steels. I have other guns for hunting so don’t really care that much about terminal performance. Just want an easy to shoot 1-1.25 moa gasser with factory ammo.

Anyone has experience with Shaw barrels in a gas gun ? LGS has a 22in 22ARC in stock … also rifle length gas.

I hope you’re right. I dimpled the barrel with the SLR jig and have ran the rifle with the gas adjusted to multiple settings, including 4 5 shot groups with the gas completely shut off. I also pulled one of my NF’s off another gas gun that will shoot .6-.8” consistently. I will try pulling the barrel and reinstalling and checking gas block clearances tomorrow. Thanks for the reply

Yeah, I’m relearning that lesson the hard way. My last few builds have been on the higher end and I had some spare parts that needed to use up so I figured I’d give it a shot. At the end of the day, I’m only out $200+ ammo if this doesn’t work out. Plus now I’ve got brass ready for the next one if I scrap it
