Just started long range shooting…today was my 3rd time shooting my new rifle, so much to learn.

I took forum members advice and bought a few types of ammo - 140 Hornady Match, 143 ELD, 144 Berger, and 147 Hornady Match.

Today I did some testing.

I did the box test at 100 yards…well part of it, and it seemed to work well (used the remaining 140gr)

Then I tested 5 shot groups…first was 143gr

Then the 144gr Berger

Then the 147gr

After this I set up to the farthest distance I could on the land…338 yards. After some trial and error, as it appeared that my muzzle velocity measurement was incorrect, causing a .2 MRAD error, I seemed to somewhat dial it in better.

Questions:

Looks like my rifle likes heavier bullets, what is other good factory ammo to try?

At 338 yards I was a 15x power, does that seem right? Is there a rule of thumb for a the right amount of power at specific distances?

Any insight is greatly appreciated, as I want to tighten everything up.

Try some 140 ELD-M. Not the 140 match.

And no there is no set power to be on for shooting at different distances. Use what gives you a clear sight picture and and to hold a solid aiming point.

What rifle and scope?

I think you have decent ammo. If you really want to add another one, look for federal gold medal match. If I'm not mistaken, it's loaded with a 130 grain bullet.

Aside from that, you'll probably have to reload.

Will do on the ELD 140gr

It’s a Defiance Deviant, 26” Bartlein MTU, Manners stock, built by Gene Gordner for Defiance as one of their demo guns…has a 3.5-25 Viper PST Gen II.

Good rifle and scope shouldn’t hold you back. You have your own range? 338 yards seems like a random number lol

It’s some farm land…338 was as far as I could get that was a clear line of site.

Totally random number 😂

That’s cool. Was just wondering as I saw where you were from and was wondering. You shoot at any ranges in the central NC area?
