Thoughts on the Aero Precision SOLUS ?

someone to roll out a bunch of 223 wyld bighorn/solus prefits.. heavy and light contours and limit length choices.. 223 case is dated, ARC are much better cases in regards to being able to run a plethora of bullets choices at mag length..

Looking forward to a ARC bolt action build in the future

well, when you compared to other barrel, spinner manufacturers aero precision is a pretty good if they can get you a barrel in a month most guys are six months or more.

If you stop looking at it like a McDonald’s, you’ll be much happier…

A well know, small shop spinning barrels= I had sent a barrel back due to headspace issues took 2+ months just for it to be looked at and sent back.

you all will have to temper expectations

When it says "in stock" and I've waited over a month before canceling, with no updates when calling, it's fair to say shipping times suck. I said what I said. Fight me.
not directing it at anybody just a generalized comment. Most people on here are just a bunch of grumpy old men, and they absolutely know every thing in the world about guns and ammo/ reloading and they’ll make sure you know it…
I wouldn’t give it any thought.

Not sure what already shipped in a day after ordering.

I've been a long-time customer of AP, and have generally been pleased with what I've gotten from them. I recently ordered a M5 builder's set in the DCU CeraKote finish, along with a lower parts kit (minus FCG & pistol grip), along with a single Solus PVD FDE action with the .382" boltface. The builders kit came pronto, but I'm still waiting on the lower parts kit & Solus action. Prior to this order, I'd also ordered an enhanced M5 FDE upper, and I'm still waiting on it. We're not quite a month out yet, but it's getting close. I'd like to order a M5 BCG, but they've been out of stock for quite some time. I don't know if they're not able to keep up after Trump got elected, or if it has nothing to do with politics. But I am looking forward to getting the DCU M5 put together, as I've got a Krieger bbl that I chambered in 6XC set up with a SLR adjustable gas tap to help tune for use with a CAT Noah 6 can that I'm looking forward to trying on this rifle...

Ordered an Obsisian last week and should be in CA by Friday. Found a good deal from a retailer back east who had them in stock. Building a 6 GT in an Elite chassis, Proof pre fit, and XRS3 G4P.
Been a while since I’ve done anything rifle related. Will report out as the build comes together.

Finally put my overstock 6mm creed barrel onto one of my Bighorn Origins and shot 30 rounds through it this morning.....I might have to get another one to chop down this one looks like it'll shoot

10 shot 100 yards group with leftover (from another 6 creed I have) 112gr Match Burners at 2970fps. 1/2" sticker. That's pretty decent for a $200 barrel with ammo developed in another rifle. 8 of the 10 shots were in 5/8" the whole group was 1 1/2".

Also shot the 125gr load from the Solus 308 I had worked up. Chrono'ed 3040fps but 5 shot groups at 100 was as expected.....blue dot groups is a Non- Solus 25-06AI with 87gr HP @ 3740fps

Less than ideal conditions for shooting today but I wanted to finish this leftover ammo so I can prep the brass. 9 shot group on the right. 112gr match burners @ 2970. 10 shot group on the left 115gr DTac @ 2950. Both are right at 1"

I shoot prone out of my truck bed between the wind moving the truck and the target I'm not disappointed. My other 6creed shoots that same 115gr load about 25fps slower and sub 1/2 so I'm curious what it'll take to tune in this barrel.

Doing better than I am. I ordered a 308 reciver black friday still no word.

8.3" .300 BLK ordered in early July... Still waiting, and they keep pushing the damn date back every month. They also have over 220 people in the chat que waiting to get their questions answered, and they don't answer the phones anymore. Starting to get pissed with them.

I got the text ad today about the $601 .382 actions not on std bolt face. Wait isn't a huge issue at the point since I'm waiting on a prefit from PVA and s chassis from MDT.
It's not just the 382 bolt faces. The 478 is also on sale. I'm pretty annoyed as I ordered one at 750 four weeks ago lol! Still waiting for it to ship. I emailed about them perhaps honoring their current sale price since they have yet to ship but I doubt they will do that. We will see.

This sale was finally enough to push me over the edge. Ordered a 6.5 Creed barreled action for $767. I'm left handed, but I've been wanting a spare right handed 6.5 as a "friends and family" rifle for my kids, dad, and a couple friends to use when they go with me to the range.

Scrub and patch-out the barrel good when it's brand new before you ever shoot it, and then again at about 50 rounds. And again at 100 rounds. Should be broken in and shooting bugholes by then. 👍🏼

I got my budget aero build pretty much completed. Got the action from a fella here who sells them. Had an issue with the supplied nut but luckily I ordered one from them ahead of time not realizing that they came with one. Luckily the second one fit correctly. Had to shave down the stock for bolt release and the trigger hanger on the Bergara stock. The barrel was a shelin 20" ss that I've had for a while and used a Triggertech trigger that was a BF sale. Scope mounts are a little high but I had those lying around too so used em. Needing my YHM brake for my surpressor still before I go sight it in.

Did it mention how long the sale was good for? I wouldn't mind a barreled action in 6.5 creedmoor.
When they sell out they sell out. I have noticed that rarely do they put more in-stock inventory for sale once their current stock sells at the sale price. So, if you want one, I'd order it ASAP while the big sale is going on.

Do any of you all have the Aero Solus chassis and if so could you check something for me? I have a 17” chassis and right at the end of my last shooting session, I started having some difficulties with the Mags not seating quite right. When I got home and was cleaning it, I noticed I might be missing a screw. Look at the picture below. I believe there’s suppose to be a small screw there.

Oh God help me. I knew it. Now……how the heck am I supposed to get a hold of Aero for a replacement or the size so I can replace it myself? Their CS, or gross lack there of, has been the subject of a few threads recently. I should probably just send them a hand written letter via snail mail, it would probably be more successful than trying to wait in their qeu line for hours. 😡

Edit: I filled out a tech request form on their website. Let’s see how long it takes for them to get back to me.

6-32x3/8”. The standard screw is a light head socket cap. I used a flat head and it also fixed the issue of the screw not having enough friction to hold the catch securely

I'd also put some Loc-Tite or VibraTite on there to ensure it doesn't fall out again. I had this happen on one of mine, except I didn't lose the screw, it just fell out of place, and the mag catch was riding up and down trying to remove the mag and wouldn't let it go. The magazine was stuck in the fucking chassis, at the range, so I had to single-shot the rifle until I could get home. I removed the screw-pin (it screws into one side with a small torx or allen bit, not a friction roll pin), and carefully dropped the whole mag and latch assembly out at once. Then put it all back together, and tossed a little Vibratite on the screw to keep that from happening again. That screw would benefit from being slightly longer shafted, IMO.

Better conditions yesterday shot the 6creed overrun barrel with H4350, 115gr DTac, Norma brass with Magtech primers. 40.0gr gave single digit SD average 2943fps and printed a nice mostly round 1/2" group with possibly a "flyer"... Good enough and other than the brass and primer it is the exact load data I shoot in my other 6creed.

Test two was 6.5 Staball and 58gr VMAX in large rifle Federal brass. All loads tested were out running the labradar so 3900+ fps. Nothing amazing accuracy wise 5/8" to 3/4" for 3 shots with a couple of charges.

Currently this barrel is on a Bighorn Origin in a Magpul Hunter stock with a Leupold VX3. It's not bedded I don't really want to because I swap it around on different actions.

Current configuration with the Aero contract overrun spiral-fluted 20" 6.5CM barrel setup... It's lightweight enough to make into a hunting rifle. It's a full-weight Solus action, TriggerTech Special set @ 1lbs., in a McMillan Game Warden Edge Fill (28 oz) stock, with a Hawkins M5 bottom metal, an MDT 5rd mag (no binder plate), a new Vortex Viper HD 5-25x50 FFP MRAD in ARC M-Brace rings, and my TBAC Magnus-S. This setup weighs about 10 lbs. It's REALLY light.

We'll see how she shoots in this stock tomorrow at the range. Hopefully it's still a 0.3xx" MOA gun, like it was in the chassis.

IMG_6021.jpeg

I put the replacement CarbonSix barrel on my Solus Obsidian action, and put it into the chassis, and topped it off with my Zeiss LRP S3 6-36x56 MRAD scope. I'll get pics tomorrow at the range. We're going to see how she shoots now that I got the new barrel in.

Well... The contract overrun barrel shot ok in the stock, I think mostly it was me not being used to the stock... But still pulled off 3/4 MOA with the same loads, and if you pulled the 5th-shot flier out of the group (that was me, not the gun), It would be closer to 0.4xx" to 0.5xx". The fact that it is now about half the weight it was before, and that I dropped down from a big heavy 30x scope to a lightweight 25x scope with a totally different cheek-weld was probably a bit of a hindrance, as well. However, it still smacks the MOA gongs at 300 with 1.1 MILs dope. So, I'm happy for a light-ish hunting rifle. I think things will improve the more I get used to shooting it with this stock and scope and at this light of weight.

This goddamn @CarbonSix barrel is still not shooting great, HOWEVER... I loaded 25 rounds at 47.5gr of StaBall 6.5. Everything the same on all the loads. And that barrel sped up 100 FPS over the span of that first 25 rounds! It started out right at 2,660 FPS, and ended up at 2,768. I've never seen one speed up that fast to that level. And the more I shot it, the better the ES/SD numbers got, so it's definitely breaking-in very fast. I got back home and did my initial check where I check torque on everything on the guns, and the rear (tang) action screw gave a pop and then torqued on up to 65, as I expected it to. So, I'm expecting that to help groups next go around, as well as the break-in. And while watching the chrono while shooting each shot in the groups, the barrel was speeding up a few FPS every damn shot, since it was speeding up so drastically, I think that was why the groups might have been a bit random. Once it finally settles, I'm hoping for better groups. It's showing better groups than the old barrel, but I'm still not impressed at all... Time will tell...As will the targets.

It's not completely in it's "final form", as I wasn't expecting it to ship so soon, so I still have to order the grip and a few other odd-n-end things, but I did already have the MDT .223 mags on-hand from another build that wouldn't cycle with the mags, and this one cycles perfectly with them, so that works out. I had already ordered the JMac Customs AB-9R w/ 1913 folding mech, and the Gearhead Works brace. I put the scope from my Ruger American Ranch .300 BLK on this one, so I can get the Ruger ready to sell. I swapped in the new TriggerTech Special and pulled the screw. Greased the action, and got it running slick. Retorqued the action back into the chassis. And then checked alignment with both my Magnus-S (7" can), and Magnus (9" can) just to make sure it's 100%...And it is. So, here's some sneak-peak looks...

Glad to see they shipped it ahead of schedule… I spent 6hrs on their online chat to ask about the .382 bolt I ordered on Nov 19th and this give me more hope than the customer service rep did.

I wouldn't call it "ahead of schedule" when the goalposts have been getting moved back every single month since they day they released... Which was the day I ordered it, back in July.

Im in the middle of a “budget” 308 build myself. I pretty much have everything except the barrel which is another 6 months or so lead time. While Im waiting im getting all my reloading dies etc sorted out. I will def post some pics once its put together.

Custom build (~$2,250 gun only, $3,100 w/ scope & rings) almost everything was bought via BF/Xmas deals

Kinda discouraging to hear that it took so long to get the 223 bolthead. I ordered another Solus short action with the .382 bolthead & PVD FDE finish back on Nov. 22, and haven't heard squat on when to expect it, even though they dinged my CC for it. Not like I'm dying here needing it, as I have a really nice 223AI on a trued M700 w/PTG custom bolt, Krieger 1-7tw sendero, TT Diamond, PTG Stealth DBM, EGW 20 MOA sloped scope base, Athlon Cronus, all in an adjustable McMillan A5. Since this rifle hammers at 600 with Berger 90VLDs, I'm not sure what I'll do with the new action when it gets here. But I've enjoyed shooting the 6XC that I put together on my 1st Solus action so much that I'm still looking forward to getting the new action and finding out how it runs as a 223...

A buddy of mime has about 60 acres up the road from me, and he was bored after hunting and texted me to see if I wanted to come out to the properly to hangout and have a bourbon drink. So, I decided perfect time to do some random barrel break-in before zero'ing and trying to get some groups from the new Solus .300 BLK pistol.

I scrubbed-out the new barrel just to ensure cleanliness, and it did have a couple specks of steel from manufacturing in there, so I'm glad I cleaned it before shooting it. I took both the Magnus, and Magnus-S and my 220 sub range/plinking loads up there and we shot about 20 rounds through it with the different cans. This little fucker is stupid quiet. It's quieter than my 16" Ruger Ranch .300 BLK with double the barrel length, and my OCL Hydro-S on the end. The 16" Ruger pushes them faster, from the extra bore length, so I think that negates the added length to quiet it down, like .22LR rifles do...Longer the barrel, quieter the shot. Not the case with .300 BLK subs.

I didn't get any pics or videos today, since we were just screwing around with it, but I will be going to the range tomorrow to zero it, and see how well it groups my 220 sub range loads. I will also be loading up some precision 210 RDF loads for it as well, for 200 & 300 yard shooting. We'll see how she does.

So... can you actually remove the dual ejectors to check headspace / seating depth with a stripped bolt?
You can, but it's not necessary to remove the ejectors. I've checked headspace on them with a stripped bolt, and with the FP in place. Same result, as long as you have a trigger installed...Becaue you install the trigger, put it on safe, and it holds the FP back anyway.

Finally going to the range tomorrow, life got in the way the last couple days. But, got everything scrubbed clean, and ready to go for the .300 BLK and the 7mm SAW. I scrubbed the shit out of the SAW barrel, and it was absolutely filthy after only 25 rounds of break-in last week. It was all gray, too, so I'm guessing that was ultra-fine metal from the barrel breaking-in, since it sped-up over 100 FPS in just that 25 rounds. I have a ladder test loaded up for it, from 46.0 to 48.0 grains of StaBall 6.5, and we'll see how she shoots. Barrel is absolutely spotless now. Patches were coming out 95% clean.

You get the same level of 'feel' with the FP and ejectors in and the safety on, as you do with a completely stripped bolt?
If you have both a go & a no-go gauge, the only important feel you'll notice is that the Go gauge closes fine, and the No-Go stops you right as you start to cam the bolt over to close it, and it won't let you push the handle down...

If you'd feel more comfortable just pop the firing pin out real quick and leave the ejectors in and do it that way.

What all is involved in removing the ejectors, though?

Elsewhere, someone (possibly with ties to Aero) claimed that you won't be able to get them back in. That seems like a kind of odd design, where the end-user can't remove the ejectors for cleaning, maintenance... or checking headspace / seating depth. For what I want to do, the spring pressure of the ejectors would interfere and mask the feel.

You can easily fully strip the bolt and put it back together:

Oh, if you know what you're doing, you can remove them, but you don't want to do all that shit. Small parts can go flying, and good luck getting spare parts from Aero right now. I don't think you want to have an inoperable gun for a while, do you? Because you can't get those parts from anyone else, should you lose one.

Maintenance of ejector springs is maybe a once in a lifetime situation, unless you shoot 10K+ rounds a year.

I have checked HS on all my Aero Solus rifles with full bolt heads, and both with and without a firing pin installed, and all have checked-out just fine. As long as you have a Go and No-Go, then it won't matter. I think you're listening to too much Reddit and YouTubers.

What specifically are you trying to do that the feel is needed that badly? Are you trying to just get away with using a Go gauge and a piece of scotch tape? If so, please, do yourself a favor and just buy a proper No-Go gauge and have a set...They're not THAT expensive. At some point, all the headache and labor isn't worth saving the extra $50 for a No-Go gauge.

I'm not talking about checking headspace in terms of go/no-go gauges, I'm talking in terms of finding the minimum amount of shoulder bump to allow the *completely stripped* bolt to fall freely on a sized case. And after that, finding the exact seating depth to the lands - which needs said sized case. Aka, the "Wheeler method".

I'm pretty proficient at it; been doing it for years on my competition guns. With most actions, it takes a few minutes to remove the FP assembly and tap out the retaining pin for the ejector plunger. Not a big deal. Not sure why Aero people are so averse to the whole process.

I have removed and reinstalled the ejectors on my .478 bolt head to measure shoulder bump.

It's a simple process and not difficult to do at all.

Punch the roll pin out that holds the ejectors in while making sure you have something to "catch" the ejector just in case it wants to spring out.

To put it back together, do the reverse. I used a glock tool to depress each ejector and installed them one at a time.
