Over the years I’ve enjoyed coffee just about every way imaginable. Lately it’s just been store-bought cold brew because it’s easy to determine how much I need to be as strong as I want

Aeropress here, though we buy our beans green and roast them ourselves to our liking.
We keep our stuff limited to what we can do at home AND whilst living on the boat. This way, we can have the coffee we like, the way we like it, wherever we are. And yes, we bring our "science package" with us when we travel too.
It is for this reason that I'm creating my own espresso machine, that kicks the Aeropress up a notch's.

Aeropress is rad! But too hard to make enough coffee for the volume I like to drink.

YES!
If I need to make more than the Aeropress can deliver in a reasonable time (like I have 6 guests over)
I will resort to an old school French press, I have a larger one
never bought an Aeropress XL, but that might do it too, only have lots of guests at the holidays so not that big of a deal
I’ve got my Baratza Encore burr grinder, my Chemex, a Breville espresso machine, and a Fellow sieve. Life is good.

Bought it for myself for a house warming present. I usually make either double espresso or a double espresso Americano, but once or twice a week plus weekends I'll make a latte. Latte's are even better with half & half.
Since I no longer buy coffee from the shops, I splurge a bit on the beans and buy from a local roaster & coffee shop.
I used to use the AeroPress every morning but I was too much time to heat the brew water, pre-heat the coffee mug, then brew. Probably 15 minutes total.

My brother gave me my coffee mug, oh better than 20 years ago. Holds more than 24oz. Just perfect to start the day. 2 1/2 to start "the day"when I'm on graveyard blocks.
My wife's given me others over the years, which I truly appreciate.

What do you mean the shot went dead ? It’s a single boiler and takes less than a minute to steam and add the milk.
Good catch. The one bean was filmed being found. I didn’t really think that added to the video so I cut it.
Hard process to do one handed while videoing.
It reminds me a lot of reloading. Get decent enough equipment and go far enough down the rabbit hole but not so far you go nuts or broke.
I did add this since the video and it is worth every penny. Battery powered, rechargeable automatic vacuum chamber. Keeps the beens fresh:
Yeah looks nice! A buddy that worked for Starbucks said they teach them that the shots “go dead” after ten seconds.
My guess is that it’s more about haste and pumping as many customers through as quick as possible.
The wiz bang coffee gurus tell you to let it sit and off-gas. The crema (so I understand.) is from co2 (or co I get them confused). The crema also holds the bitterness. That’s my understanding but again I’m still learning.
That’s a super dark roast, which produces more crema than a blonde or lighter roast.
It’s tricky. Looking for a 1 in to 2 out ratio in 24-30 seconds. You dial that in with the grind size so there is some trial and error.
Because this is a manual machine, you’ll notice I do a couple things before and during the pull:
- I run the water a few seconds before I put the basket in and pull and start the shot. That reduces the water temperature a bit for the dark roast. “Temperature surfing”
- Then I open up the steam valve for five seconds which kills the pressure and allows it to do what they call pre-infusion of the puck. After five seconds, I close the steam valve and the pressure goes up and the shot pulls.
I run a Bunn Speed Brew, pour the water and have a full pot ready in four minutes flat. When the wife and I go through three pots a day, one pot split between the two of us while getting ready in the morning and each take another pot to drink through the day at work, we don't have time to bullshit around. It's also handy when I have to head into work in the middle of the night, coffee is ready by the time I get back inside from firing up the work truck.
I swill cheap Folgers Black Silk like some swill cheap beer, I still think $6.00/lbs for the grounds is outrageous and only buy it when it's on sale for less than that. I refuse to set foot in any of the coffee joints, way the fuck over priced for coffee, I'll just slam a Red Bull instead.
We have one of those fancy pants Nespresso machines for the foo-foo coffee, makes a nice enough double espresso for my tastes with a push of a button while the wife likes the milk foam thing for her fancier coffees. Happy wife, happy life.

On workdays, I use a 5 cup drip coffee maker to make my morning coffee. On the weekend or if I need an extra cup at work, I use an Aeropress.

For drip coffee I use the cuisinart. Works really good. In the evenings I’ll make a cup or three of pour over using either the hario or espro. Also have a French press that always gives good results. Ok, enough talking. Time to brew a cup
