John, we and many others in the northern 1/2 of BC have no family doctor. Not even a walk-in clinic with any open appointments. Figure out that word salad eh? ERs are often closed here and in all the towns around due to staff shortages. Last time my wife got into a walking the “new Canadian” laughed at her and suggested cosmetic surgery. Your experience is very rare, maybe because you know your care providers personally.

I’m trying to be polite here, but after 35-ish years in the trades, I’m letting your BS off very lightly.

Well, that's BC....you've had NDP and Libs dragging you around for years. The Conservatives put hospitals in every dinky little town here in the 80's....at great expense, but we have the facilities. Short staffed....sure...could use more. - Know the staff personally?.....just the nurses, etc.
The docs are ALL from South Africa.....like in many of our rural areas.
- As for the 35 yrs in the trades....I still have all my parts....even though I have had some shoulder repairs, stiches, set bones....not sure of your point.?
- I guess I was just meaning I havent spent my time behind a safe, cozy desk, and have bee exposed to our hospital system.
Yes we have problems....and getting worse with unions and new Canadians....but we arent in hock to have a baby, or get surgery.
I really am trying to be fair. I just think the States could use some adjusting......like ours.

More hospitals mean absolutely nothing when there aren't enough doctors. And this is nothing new in Canada. We had a family doctor when I was a kid. We moved to a different city when I started junior high and couldn't find a doctor until I was half-way thru high school. I sprained my ankle badly playing basketball prior to that and ended up waiting 13 hours in the ER to get seen. That was in the early 90s and the new city had just built a big shiny new hospital. It had everything state-of-the-art and the waiting room was beautiful, but it didn't change the fact that the only doctor they had on call was completely swamped. My aunt ( a woman in her late 50s at the time) got hit by a car while riding her bike and ended up at that same new shinny hospital (the only one in the city, and for 100 miles). The swamped ER doc put up his thumb, squinted an eye and said: "Yeah, you look fine...". Didn't send her for an x-ray or anything. She continued having cheat pains, went back and a different doctor (after the shift change) decided to do an x-ray. 3 broken ribs... She would have been rich off the lawsuit if it happened in the US. But in Canada? Again, no recourse for stuff like that up there and no accountability. Also back in the 90s. When I went away to school, I lost my doctor again and didn't get another one until 2 years after graduation. He was in his 70s and ended up dying a few years later. Then, no doctor again for several year. That was 2000s.

My surgery that went awry that I mentioned above was around 2011. It's nothing new! The Canadian healthcare system was never great, at least not in most provinces. My sister has muscular dystrophy. Weakens all muscles, including the heart, so she's at high risk for a heart attack. She was having chest pains in the summer. Went to the ER and waited 7 hours. She finally just up and left since it had passed and there was no indication she was going to be seen any time soon.

I could go on for pages with stories about myself or family members (not "some guy I know"). I don't know anyone personally in Canada who doesn't have at least one story of themselves or someone close to them that's experienced it. Anyone who doesn't is either downplaying it or should go buy a lottery ticket. Canadians are just more tolerant of mediocrity, especially if it make something look worse than the American equivalent. The inferiority complex that's ingrained into the culture won't allow for something American to be better. The US system isn't perfect, but it's orders of magnitude better than the Canadian system. There's a reason even commies like Jack Layton come down here for treatment when they have something serious. If you haven't experienced both then you really have no idea. You're just going by the BS the CBC pushes that you go bankrupt any time you need a surgery in the US. Nope! Not like that! I have health insurance thru work. If I wanted more, I could buy the best health insurance out there privately, and I would still have a way bigger chunk of my paycheck left over than what I have after income tax in Canada (even with copays, deductibles, etc...).

Having experienced both systems personally (twice), this is what you sound like to me trying to make the Canadian system sound like it isn't complete dog shit:

I guess there really is an 'Alberta Advantage'. I live in a county with 3500 people, we have a modern hospital with 4 doctors, and you can choose any for your family doctor.

I have had close family members treated immediately for serious issues that plainly saved their lives. For that, I would have traded my worldy possessions for the aid. But it didnt cost me anything beyond what my taxes include.
So that, and the rest of my many family jaunts to the ER, I would class as my 1st hand experience.

Fine, if there's one province where the healthcare system might not be a complete dumpster fire, it would be Alberta. But realize that you're the exception, not the rule. Going East (from Ontario and beyond), places with 3500 people won't even have hospitals unless they're really remote. That hospital from high school I mentioned served a city of 50k plus another 20-30k from the surrounding areas. Some of these people had to drive 50km or more.

For the US readers; the reason I keep emphasizing having a family doctor is because you can't just go and see a specialist (or do many other medical related things) directly like you can here. You HAVE to have a referral. If you don't have a family doctor, you have to go to the ER to see a doctor to get the referral. You will get triaged. Every single person that walks in after you with a minor injury will bump you back in the line. All of the junkies the police drag in to detox will bump you back in the line. You can work all your life paying half your salary in taxes, then move or lose your doctor and have to do that. Meanwhile, some deadbeat who has never paid a cent of tax in their life has one because they've had them since they were a child. You lose a bigger chunk of your paycheck, get less for it, and you may not be able to access it easily while many of society's parasites can. That's supposedly a "kinder and fairer" system. Paying vs. not paying for something shouldn't be a factor, according to liberals. Like shopping in California...
