As stated above. I didn't really study the picture and thought it was hardwood floor.

Add to my original response. Fucking really cool RC rig. My neighbor was running his trophy truck around the pasture in the snow when I got home from work. Damn thing is fast and takes some abuse.
Understood, it is kind of a forced perspective shot. Thanks! Yeah, RCs and snow are fun as hell so long as you waterproof everything. Sadly my old ass batteries just couldn't feed the beast of motor this thing has. Got some new packs on order, and hoping for more snow.

This is common core witchcraft
What is hiliarious is that the graphic below the problem IS the solution.

8+9=17
And,
(8+2)+7=17, where 8+2 “creates a 10.”
And equally valid solution is…
(9+1)+7=17, where 9+1 “creates a 10.”

Without saying as much, this problem demonstrates the associative and commutative properties of addition.

What you wrote is idiotic and that’s why Chinese kids run circles around ours.

On the command of fall out, fall out and fall in on that nerd back there.

common core math fks kids up. Kids end up hating math because most of the teachers can't explain it properly anyways. When parents can't simply show kids how to add and subtract, kids aren't learning correctly.
Math use to be straight forward 30 years ago in school. The ed dept then took a bunch of teachers that don't know math and came up with a curriculum.
This is a check box for flunky teachers and Administrators
  • demonstrates the associative and commutative properties of addition
at the end of the day, kids can't add or subtract, but, hey, the Administrators' can brag.. we teach "demonstrates the associative and commutative properties of addition."

In HS I had two math teachers. One was amazing in the way she explained stuff and everyone understood and progressed in the class. The other was horrible and made learning hard. We were basically left on our own to figure it out using our math books. She was a waste of taxpayer dollars.

30 (closer to 40 now) years ago, we had to be able to name the properties and write equations that demonstrate them. These are not new concepts.

Now, the kids are given assignments with the answers baked into them, and the parents that went through that curriculum still don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground.

Out of context of the rest of the assignment, this problem looks weird. But, I’d bet dollars to donuts that within context of the assignment, it is part of a rational progression.

I had my own “wtf, that’s not how to math” moment with both of my boys. What realized, however, is that the issue was not with the curriculum per se, it was with ineffective teaching. I taught them what I was taught, then I figured out what they were being taught, and broke that down so that they understood it.

After 30+ years, I had to look up the names of the properties, but I knew immediately what was being taught.
