Not me but a pretty serious girlfriend I had a long time ago was in college at UNC and saw the same thing. We grew up in northern IL so a light dusting was nothing for her to drive through. But it was the apocalypse for everyone else in the Raleigh-Durham area. She said she actually didn’t see anyone on the highway, which is better than all of the cars flipped over and on fire, and had to flag down a janitor in the building she was working in to get inside. He let her in but his eyes were as wide as they could get and he was absolutely amazed she “braved the weather” and survived
CT starts at the western edge of Chattanooga/Hamilton Co, parents lived in CT and Dad worked on ET, weird but they stayed on ET and didn't bother them. Crossville/Crab Orchard is the start of CT along the I-40 corridor, so. I live in-between Chattanooga & Knoxville, and go to Knoxville as it's a bit closer, and I'm more familiar with the area as I went to UT-K in the mid 70's. I don't like Chattanooga's traffic pattern of lots of one way streets, and it sits in a hole (think Orlando as I lived there as well). Chattanooga can get some nasty weather coming from the gulf/AL/MS, and Knoxville may get the same weather if it follows I-75, but a lot of the times the bad weather goes over into NC. Knoxville can get some weather that comes over and down the Plateau (Crossville & I-40), so it really depends on where the weather is coming from.
Anywhere north of Indianapolis-ish and east-ish of the Mississippi can be a motherfucker in winter. I grew up in northern IL(not near Chicagostan) and one of the few snow days I remember at school was for wind chills of -50. But, we didn’t let that deter us from playing outside and enjoying our day off
