Truck needs a new engine, need the motor heads opinions

So my 2019 Nissan Titan, 73k miles needs a new engine. Known problem with a bad batch of cylinders, luck of the draw if you got one or not. I bought it new, still under warranty. 100k or 96 month. Keep it or ship it after I get it back? Everything else is in good shape. No other issues.

Keep it...paid for is cheaper than a payment....
And the guy above me is right... everything new is complete crap.

They made them bigger, heavier, less displacement, more mpg, and that all comes with a price... increase pressure on the engine.

Talk all you want about engine management...blah blah blah... 11:1 compression ratio on pump gas(87) is a bomb waiting to explode.

There is a reason why a tall deck 427 in a dump truck will last 300k+ ...it only revs to 4k and has 8.7:1 compression...oafs along down the road at low rpm and the transmission a differential do the heavy lifting.

I'd say it depends if you like it, if it's paid off, and if you want another vehicle payment. As someone who works on new shit, I don't think I will ever buy a newer vehicle. I do a lot of electrical troubleshooting and have no desire to deal with that on my own vehicles.

Not quite that simple. Higher compression can be accommodated with electronic control of the injectors, at least with diesels it can. Typically 3 or more sprays of fuel per cycle. This spreads the burn out, so the fuel burns and does not explode in the cylinder.

If it’s paid for then get it back. Run 91 octane and do frequent oil changes. No more the 5k miles.

Doing maintenance more then manufactured recommendations is still cheaper then a $800 truck payment.

I look at new trucks often but to get an equivalent model of my daily driver (2012 Ram fully loaded) would cost me like $65k. That’s insane.

The cost of new rigs is idiotic. Even moderately new. Have a friend that has a 2016ish ram with their little diesel (3.5 liter I think) and it blew up on him. Cost was over $20k for a used engine and close to $30k for a new upgraded one. He went with the new, but what a ridiculous price.

Cylinder 7 and/or timing chain went through this with a relatives 2018 Armada

Have it fixed and just keep driving it they aren't bad tbh I've seen some titans with 300k miles on them

Half tons with all the EPA super saving active cylinder management...

Lifters get stuck mid cycle and need to be replaced. If you're halfway handy $1200 gets you a new valley cover and all fresh LS7 lifters fixing the problem forever.
It makes it 10x worse when you use crappy oil and don't change it often enough. You know, what 90% of new vehicle drivers do.

My 16 has 330k on it now. Still doesn't even burn or leak oil. But it's a 3500 with the L96 6.0, and it has normal lifters and no AFM. One of the side effects of driving crew cab long box trucks, is you skip the silly 1500 stuff.

It's a Titan. I'd throw it away myself, but they have the worst interior of any truck I've sat in. I'd actually take a Ford before I had another Nissan.

I'm still trying to figure out how they designed their front seats to be such effective torture devices.

Do you want to keep it? If this is what you need to justify something different then drive it straight to wherever you’re going to trade it in and get what you want. If you’re happy enough with it just keep it maintained properly and enjoy it.

I drive a ‘17 Armada that that I’ve had for a few years and put about 20k miles on so far. It’s towed a camper all over the CO mountains and to the black hills in SD. It’s also my dd and used as a kid with associated crap hauler. The only complaint I have is that I don’t have a small econo-shitbox to do most of my daily driving with. Because it’s a big wallowy suv it gets a combined ~14 mpg and it’s expensive as shit to keep fed

Take that $13,000 and go put a down payment on a Toyota Camry, get a trailer hitch put on, and you’ll be able to pull and transport things that don’t fit in the 5” bed of the Titan, lol.

What pisses me off the most is how GM could build a great engine back in 1999 (the 5.3L) but today these same companies cannot build an engine that doesn't swallow valves or jump teeth on the timing chain or eat itself alive

I’m still driving a 2014 Titan Pro-4X. When the engine or transmission goes I’ll just put another one in.

Thank the EPA...

Up until the new 6.6 gasser you could get away from it all by skipping the 1500s. Now the 6.6 is direct injected and will likely end up with carbon issues before 200k.

All in the quest to keep up with the arbitrary fuel mileage increases from carb and the EPA.

Agreed on new pricing - it's insane. 30+K for a piss ant corolla. Don't even look at crew cab truck pricing.

Even Toyota has been having manufacturing issues. Glad I have my 2005 Gen 1, but it's only a 5/6 scale not a full 1/2 ton. But I have a 2015 F350 for any real heavy work.

First issues to arise was with the 2007 Gen 2 Tundra tranny essentially exploding internally. Now it's 2023ish new 6 cylinder engines (also on Lexus) shitting the bed. Supposedly bad machining on the cylinders, new factory engines for everyone eventually.

A buddy just bought a '24 1500 3.0L diesel with the technology package. Nice fuel economy but that technology package repair is going to be more than the truck is worth once it starts having issues.

GM's have been having issues with electronics, and even the little air dampeners in the new Camaros for several years. Another buddy just retired as GM Mechanic with 59 years of service. He hates the Camaro's and Corvettes with a passion, although it made him a lot of money through his final years to retirement last year.
