Just a little while ago…

Local news reporting out of Kansas City:

“We’re aware of reports that American Eagle flight 5342, operated by PSA, with service from Wichita, Kansas (ICT) to Washington Reagan National Aiport (DCA) has been involved in an incident,” American Airlines tweeted. “We will provide information as it becomes available.”

PSA CRJ700 hit a Blackhawk used for vip transport.

flip that around and thats probably what happened.

The airlines are SUPER SUPER controlled going in and out of DCA. The fucking helicopters are a nightmare there.

ATC feed seems to show the blackhawk was told to fly behind the CRJ...

Helo's in the area are on a separate frequency from the rest of the DCA traffic... there is a helo corridor on the east side of the river.

Not to mention the airspace there is tight with all the flight restricted areas, then you add in the helos there with all the light pollution at night and it makes seeing them difficult.

Listening to that audio, there was 20 seconds from when tower asked pat25 if they had visual, to when somebody in the background it appears to say OMG…. then it sounds like radio silence until another aircraft ask tower if they saw the crash

Edit: they just said the helicopter was transmitting on a different frequency.

Some of the ground tracks are from a source where replay is available. Looking at that, PAT25 source was mlat, not ads. It did however show their squawk.

They were low enough that RAs would have been inhibited, and most likely any audio TA too.

Also, a clear night is far worse than one with restrictions to visibility for discerning moving targets with little to no relative motion.

The threat was right of center, and they were circling left.

Is it bad that my first thought was an attack on Trump staffers etc?

Or are there any HVPs on either the Black Hawk or AA flights? Any survivors? Doesn't look good. As of now 18 bodies recovered and no apparent survivors visible. What is it called an aircraft Internet in boats resources afternoon

Reminded of the Florida Air flight 90 that crashed in the fridgid Potomac killing 78 on board in 1982.

Prayers with the families, regrdless of party affiliation.
The momentum so far in the past week seem palpable in a good way; this will certainly be a mood damper but also a time to appreciate everyone that commutes to DC; and we often see the better sespects of humanity comng through.

There was also an F 35 crash at Eielson Airport today (Alaska), but fortunately the pilot ejected and it's being monitored for non-life-threatening injuries.

Looking at the Baltimore-Washington Helicopter chart, the top of Route 1 and Route 4 where the helo was flying is 200'.

I'm going to resist going looking for the KDCA Obstruction Chart which should also show the obstruction clearance plane for 33. But, I won't be surprised if that Helicopter Route penetrates it.

We're supposed to identify and mitigate threats. Crossing under an active approach needs to be better handled.

Ugh. So many retards. The CRJ wasn’t mysteriously drifting into the helo. It’s the normal approach for the visual in DCA for RW33
Indeed. Was based in dca for two years. Did it all the time.

Couple personal policies I’ve developed over the years not that any of these would have stoped this. Never call traffic in sight at night near cities and relieve ATC of their separation control. It’s too easy to lose sight in the lights.

IMO that help should have been told to hold north of the runway until the CRJ was in the ground. This was so avoidable. DCA runs like clockwork it’s a busy airport but they move move aircraft like pros.

My initial thoughts this morning is how did the circle to land clearance coincide with the h60 being told to maintain visual separation. Did the h60 think that they were still landing on 1? Doesn’t relieve them but some questions need to be answered.

Can’t wait to see what dumb changes come out of this.

Il call it.

It’s Didn’t Earn It’s Destroying Everything Intentionally. Again.

Well not intentionally their just dumb.

But yeah a dei in one or more of the tower , the plane , the Helicoptor , or leadership of the aforementioned
I’d still like to blame someone on the ground…like a baggage handler or gate check attendant.

Why would this exam be performed so close to DCA? Was this a proficiency exam on navigating in the DC Airspace. Was this somebody "learning" or "annual". MEGA fuck up on US Army from what it appears. Admittedly I do not know what's involved in a UH-60 proficiency training flight; but one would naturally think it wouldn't be that close to a HUB in an already congested airspace.

What will be interesting is who was being tested, who was in charge of testing in the aircraft, and who authorized that route.

I’m not so sure it’s a case of globohomo or DIE …
This wasn’t an initial training flight, it was a recurrent night check of an experienced crew.
DCA ATC is also fairly senior and experienced
The RJ crew did everything right, perfectly flown the ILS RW01 visual circling to 33 and they were on path laterally and vertically and there’s no way they would have seen that Blackhawk on the right side.

There’s been a lot of close calls both on the pilot side and on the ATC side in the last 2-3 years it was bound to happen.

Complex systems won’t survive the competence crisis

It’s going to get worse before it gets better.

I heard that from other sources.

Interesting

They had a statement from the Russian govt. on Newsmax this morning. I didn't detect any "blame game" stuff going on. In fact, the official said something to the effect of, "There is no need for direct diplomatic contact at this point."

I just hope the new Trump admin. handles this right with all necessary transparency. I don't want to yell, "Conspiracy Theory" just yet. But, from what I can tell, the American flight was on the correct approach into DCA under VFR, and it was the Blackhawk that hit the CRJ. One would think the blackhawk pilots were trained well enough to avoid it. And I believe I'd heard that the tower tried to get the Blackhawk to confirm that it had the CRJ "in sight." Yet, the collision happened anyway. Why?

This is the reason why athletic teams never (or should never) travel altogether on the same plane./train/bus, etc..
