New McMillan HTG M40A1 smear stocks!!!

So this is my set up for now till I get a correct repo mount on my gun. It's a Badger 20moa base and USMC A3 type rings. The next set lower. Yes there is clearance between the mount and the bell of the scope... you can't see it in the pic but about .020" clearance. Can't get it any lower. LOL!

McMillan ran a few near the end of the M40A1 run. I wonder if they were just using up the special green paint they had. Some of the earlier releases had bold lime green and it looks to have tapered off later on. Just my perception and there are exceptions if you scroll the photos in this thread.

I wonder if all these recent one offs and special patterns are to practice techniques and gauge market interest to standardize some of these camo offerings. I’m also half a conspiracy nut, and tend to read too much into stuff. 😂

The last two releases had no forest smear just urban and desert so that might have only been a short time or just in between batches. I wish they would just let us order what we want..... Apparently they confirmed they are doing limited M2A (DMR) stocks like they just did mod0 stocks so just have to keep an eye open for what pops up for half a second.

I should be going to shot show in two months.

I'll make a note to swing by they're booth and talk to them about all of this.

I didn't know about desert smear until about a week ago. I just ordered an A5-7 and thought about hassling them to see if they would do it in desert smear but just decided to go gap instead. They currently have an A1-3 in "urban smear" available. Not a clone for anything but it looks cool.

I picked mine up from my local builder Friday.

Before the Clone Police come with their Flashbang…..

The receiver is correctly clip slotted.

The Badger rail, spare scope and BO rings will suffice until the correct parts are obtained.

And the barrel, well it’s remaining natural as my wife likes the look of the complete platform ‘As Is’

We have been married 37 years and she allows me a lot of freedom with my addiction and I want to keep it that way.

In this case compromise is acceptable by me.
We’re redfield rings used regardless if it was a redfield or unertl? What is the go to scope mount for a proper clone?

It depends on which era you want to go with. Originally they were redfield mounts and rings with Redfield 3x9 scopes. Then when the Unertl 10X came out, they did use the redfield mount and rings for a very short period of time on the first ones. Then a Unertl mount came out for the Unertl 10X.

It just depends on what era you want to go with and which scope you want to use.

Finally snagged one, Number 066! It's home will be up here in Canada, with a nicely done 242xxx action. I have a C3 marked 10x Unertl that was intended for my Canadian C3A1 clone, but the Canadian Unertl mounts are basically non-existent, so in the meantime it may find a home on the M40A1 with my repro mount. I also have a Weaver T10 that could work... Super excited to build it all out!

So redfield were used up into the 70s then when did the unertl start being issued?

I’m wanted to go for a mid 80s-90s version but I haven’t figured out if I’ll be able to muster the price of a Unertl, so for the sake of cost I may do an earlier version and get a 3x9 since they seem to command less of a premium.

Redfield greenies, matte black, and Widefield scopes were used by the Marines on the Transitional M40A1's from 1977 to 1982. The Marines received 25 prototype Unertl MST-100 scopes in 1980, but didn't start receiving the regular production Unertl MST-100 scopes until 1982. From 1977 to 1982, all of those different Redfield scopes and the 25 prototype Unertl MST-100 scopes were mounted on Redfield 40X and 700SA scope bases with Redfield 1" medium height scope rings. Some of these Redfield base/ring sets were welded together sometime around 1980. Unertl based their M40A1 scope mounts directly from the welded Redfield mounts, with some modifications.

I hope this helps!

Weaver T-10 would also be acceptable for an earlier transitional A1 correct Ryan?

Incredibly helpful thank you for laying it all out!

I’ve been waiting for one of these to show up. Today it happened. Plan is to wait for a Bartlein MED SS, and have built onto my LRB.

My son likes the Urban Smear. He said it’s like Navy Camo which I never thought of.

There’s still one up with adjustable saddle right now.

I mildly regret not picking up the A1-3 they had in that color scheme.

I'm having second thoughts about my smear stock. I picked up 006 last year with plans to upgrade my M40A1. I thought the smear would look better with the camo paint on my issued Unertl.

Now that I have tried the stock on the rifle, I'm not sure it would be an upgrade over the forest camo stock. More of the lighter green seems to look better to me.

What do you think smear or forest?

Thanks, guys. If it were a return stock it would be a no-brainer, I would just say it looks good and move on.

That's the challenge with these return scopes and other parts; they are all unique and never match perfectly. Still, I never want to remove paint or mess with them. I didn't even want to remove the sand from around the screws on the scopes I got!

I think I'll stick with the forest camo stock now since it is already bedded to the rifle and shoots very well.

I'll either find a new home for the smear stock...or maybe I'll just have to start a new build for it, ha!

I might be interested if you do decide to re-home that smear... Keep me in mind if you decide to go that route 👍

Can I make one more suggestion. Get rid of those butler creek flip ups. Get an old GI wool sock and make a scope cover. It was recommended to me by others here. Looks way better when you get rid of the butler creeks.

Both are cool. The smear is amazing. If you decide you don't like the smear, I'd be happy to purchase it from you.
