SHOT 2025: US-Made SVD Dragunov from Insight Armory

this is neat, but the real interesting question is mags. if they have good 10s, but especially if they make 20s and 30s that will make a lot of existing SVD owners very happy.

personally I'd love an SVU version of the Tigr in 300 win mag

the vepr 54r would be a good shooting option for a lot less money. The problem with the vepr is a narrow receiver that only allows single stack magazines. This Insight armory svd would be fun to shoot. Lapua brass handloads...pull down russian steel case and load with better powder/bullets?

the biggest problem with reloading 54R right now is hornady stopped producing the SSTs in .312 cal. Those were the fucking tits for SVD specific loadings

46gr varget over the .312 SST with a Tula or CCI LR primer in a lapua case takes a Tigr from ~4 moa with crappy mil ball to just about 1 flat

Load dev was done at the request of a friend who owns one of the Tigr import models

(will edit with pics)

i did a bubba from a chinese sks , found the rifle in a pawn shop , had a 4 digit serial number , wasnt the best of lighting , i thought it was a early Ghost gun , pretty rare , bought it , get home to the well lit gunroom , it was scrubbed and renumbered , never tracked down why , i needed another shooter sks like i needed a 2nd peter so decided to have fun with it , it is 922r compliant with appropriate number of USA parts , has old school China star 20 rd mag , scope and scope mount

tbh doesn't look that bubba at all.

if it's still shooting 7.62x39, try this:

Hdy .310 123gr SST over 26.2gr Accurate 1680, Prvi 1x fired brass, seated to cannelure with a roll crimp, tula or CCI LR primer.

pretty much a clone load of the Hornady Black, for 1/4 the price

the blue in the above pic was me experimenting with some homebaked sealer, 1/1 acetone to OPI nail polish mix, a little sweep and it seals the primer nicely

thank you , i only have shot what i have a supply of ,steel cased Wolf and like ,never went for precision with it , it shoots well , nothing special , what you would expect from a SKS , it was a fun project , its a Lucky Shot Stock , i had him send it bare because i knew i had to fit the mount to the rifle and inlet , i bought aniline dye and tinted amber shellac , used dark walnut for the accents first then applied the shellac , kept the mount as low as i could , the bottom screw is on the floor of the receiver basically

I say that's a great refinish job then. and you'd be surprised what a good load can do for the old combloc rifles. I think half the reason they get an unfair knock as 'inaccurate' is mostly because they are shot with soviet mass-manufacture military spec ammo, and not something with stricter quality control.

if you just want factory loads, grab a box of the Hornady Black SSTs and see how they do for you. should be a marked improvement, and they do quite nicely for deer

i think i will take you up on that and find some good commercial and do a side by side comparison , i will at a minimum buyt a few box's of the Black SSTs you suggest thankyou

wow , i would have thought for that money it would be brass cased never mind that stuff wasnt SST

This is the former Helsinki KGB Station Chief’s SVD from the Soviet times, sold on the Finnish market after the Soviet collapse to a Finnish collector (my friend). He had all the BII for it too, including a metal hard case if I recall, the winter battery kit for the PSO-1, and a bunch of items I had never seen or heard of before. Beautiful-looking rifle when taking the wood, fit, feel, and finish into account, compared to others I’ve seen.

I always thought it would be cool to add one to the collection.

needs an NPSU with the armory case and all the fittings like my friend has (I keep telling him he should get the armorer's logs in there translated)

If they weren’t so expensive, I would have grabbed one of the recent B&T imported FEG’s. Maybe I’m just a pessimist but seems like the import would be the smarter buy than this US offering.
