I would sit in my grandparents floor and dig through these things for hours. I was that kid who asked why about everything. So as soon as I could read, they'd just point me to the encyclopedia rack.
It killed me to throw them away years ago. We had the "kids version" and the standard version of the Encyclopedia Britannica on book shelves in the living room. Another set, possibly those same ones down in the basement. I can only imagine what my parents paid for them. spent so much time flipping through them, using them for school reports. It felt criminal to toss them, but i knew they'd never get used again and no one wanted them. Twenty years later just mentioning it upsets me and fills me with guilt.
