223 vs 22 arc 16” for ranch rifle

Just go ARC. You're shooting moving targets. You want your bullet there as quickly as possible. You can also load the 62 eldvt with more room in the arc than in the 223. Not that you want to specifically run that bullet but it might be a good option with the coyotes.

I like the 223 for that purpose but now with ARC being commercially viable it’s a great choice since it gives you the option to run heavy 224 stuff with plenty of ass to push it. Plus it’s a pretty neat cartridge that fills a void

300 yards and in. Coyotes to turtles….

Will the 22 arc give me a bigger grin than 223 will for this purpose?
If you plan on only shooting factory ammo... .223 will be cheaper to feed, but if you plan on reloading, or you just want more "ass" behind it for killing coyotes, go .22 ARC.

Personally, I'd go .22 ARC regardless, but that's just me.

Will it give you a bigger grin? Probably not, for 300 yards you probably won't even notice. Considering the ARC has less case capacity than the valkyire and it was only getting 100 or 150fps on a plain 223. I wouldn't expect the the diffrence to noticeable for 300 yards.

The case capacity of the 22ARC is 34.7 grains H2O while the case capacity of the 224 Valkyrie is 34.5 grains. Moreover, hodgdon loading data consistently shows heavier max charges for the 22ARC.

For me, when considering the 22ARC v 223/5.56, the question is not “how fast can an AR15 in 22arc shoot light bullets. Instead, the question is “how fast can an AR15 in 223/5.56 shoot the very heavies like 88 or 90, loaded to mag length?…” 🤔😉

Funny you mention Hodgdon. They put the 22 arc before the 224v on their list which normally runs from low to high case capacity wise. They do consistently show the arc charges with a couple grains more then the valkyrie, to make the same velocity when shooting 55g bullets. They both shoot 55g bullets about 100fps faster than a 223 just like I said. So please, go notice that 300 yards and in and tell me if it gives you more of a "giggle."

Dead caliber. 🤣🤣 I know a guy who shoots 218 Bee.

You know.
Some people like to shoot instead of sitting around basically doing desk work for hours and hours.

(MV is in FPS and Drop is in inches)

Across the listed loads, the 22Arc averages 76 fps faster than the 224Valk and 191 fps faster than the 223. The 224Valk averages 96 fps faster than the 223. And, as I mentioned above, the ARC and the Valk give one the option to shoot the heavies that the 223/5.56 cannot.

All that said, I'd wager that the performance gap narrows substantially when going from a 24" barrel down to a 16" barrel. All will lose velocity, but my feeling is that the 22ARC and 224Valk lose more than the 223.

So right in the range I said....🤣🤣🤣

And a 223 can shoot any .224 caliber bullet the other two can. This is bolt action rifles. We aren't constrained to 2.25 mag length.

I checked the weight on the gen 2 ruger ranch. 6lb 11.2oz.

I pulled a s&w ar15 out of the safe that I have a 16" DD barrel on, took the acog off, and it is 6lb 11.0 oz

lol.

May just throw a dang 1-8 NX8 on this and roll with it. My only beef with the AR is im 90% going to lose brass shooting it out in a hayfield somewhere.. Thats the only thing that bugs me with rolling around with a semi auto.

I do have some 53Vmax to load and 62 eld vt

53 v max is my go to 223 varmint bullet. For genral purpose varmint shooting something that uses 223 brass is always the correct answer for cheap reloading. If you want to increase the giggles and splats and keep the cheap to loose 223 cases and the ar15 platform. I would suggest taking a look at the 20 practical. It chunks stuff up bad with 39g seirras and 40g v max. 😳

I just put a 22 ARC together with a 16 inch Faxon barrel. Not picky at all, shoots better than expected. 80 gr. ELDM on top of SMP763 work great. Really liking it.
