Point of diminishing returns for a 2-12 ish scope

    Greetings all. Happy dance, I think I have my sons AR-10's figured out - they are kicking out brass at 3 o'clock and shooting straight.

    With that said, on the optics front we have a 3 bears issue - one is wearing a 1-6 Razor, the other a 4-16 ATACR, and they seem to agree too little, too much respectively.

    I believe "just right" is the Trijicon AccuPoint® 2.5-12.5x42 Riflescope


    Maybe I'm a bad father, but I'm an MOA guy and so we're sticking with MOA for the purposes of this. I'm too dumb to divide by 10.

    So with that said - am I missing anything that would be a better value for the ~ $1000 range for a 2-12 (ish) scope?

    This is for a 16" 308, so as a practical matter we're a 600-800 yard gun due to home range and ballistic reality limitations.

    Requirements - illumination, holdovers built into reticle, parallax adjustment, $1000 ish ceiling, real warranty, hold up to AR-10, and I feel like the Trijicon is already on the porky and long side at about 14" and 22.4 oz.

    Am I missing any better options?

    Have you thought about a 1-10 or 1-8 LPVO?
    You might need to up your budget a bit but there are some great options depending on if you want FFP on SFP (if you are one of those MOA types, you might also be one of those SFP types).

    I'd prefer FFP but want to stay lighter than the Trijicon - The Maven is interesting but unproven relative to where I want to be in both performance and warranty, heavier, and I like the lowest end mag being lower.

    I'd love to get to the 1-10 razor, but do want to stay in budget-ish and have as big an objective as reasonable. Razor 1-10 = $2K used. VCOG 1-8 would be great but similarly $$$. This is for the children. Daddy has his.

    Props for two suggestions that make me think.

    Side focus vs FFP... appears the trade off is same/same as far as weight. We're mainly hunting south Texas where if you're within a couple hundred yards, SFP/FFP doesn't matter and if you see it across a field, you hopefully have a second, but, I will sleep on those.

    Trij vs Trij, I do prefer the 15 year no batteries of the Accupoint vs the Credo.

    Leupold pissed me off over a f&(k!ng rangefinder - top of the line broke at 26 months, 2 months out of warranty, and they offered me the same discount I could have gotten on Amazon on a new one. Considering the number of gold rings in the safe I thought that was poor form but not necessarily to the level if its the best option I would not consider them. If anything, make them prove they can hold up to the AR-10...

    no the trijicon credo and tenmiles are perfect for if looking for an under 1000$ sfp option. maaaybe give their 2-10x36 a look. But trijicon along with lots of great features has much better reliability than the other brands mentioned like leupold athlon arken etc

    I'm a big LPVO fan. I've either owned or, at least, spent some time behind all of the popular ones. Knowing what I now know, after a long an expensive search for the perfect LPVO for me; I'll say that if you don't need a 1x, don't go with an LPVO.

    Considering your budget, I'd go with either the 2-10 Trijicon or the 2.5-10 Leupold. Either will out perform an LPVO costing twice as much or more at everything but having a 1x.

    I chose to go with the 2.5-10 Leupold Mark4. The lack of parallax hasn't been an issue to distances appropriate for that magnification. I've had mine out to 800 and it performed well.

    I just got my Helos 2-12 zeroed. Starting field trails soon. The locking turrets are great for a SHTF & hog gun. They're cheap, but it even came with scope caps! My only concern is with the size of the MOA dot at 10-12X is damned big. I like thicker reticles too, but I'll know more ringing steel at 600-1000. My hopes are that I am off the dot and holding for wind at 1 mil with 5.56.

    You get used to that thick reticle and what you'll discover is there is almost always wind, plus you can hit stuff just fine with thick reticles, but most importantly why we like this scope is the reticle is usable on low mag so the FOV is huge, the exit pupal allows more light to your eye there, and so at 6x the IQ is bright and the reticle seems normal sized, or kinda like a SFP scope is.
    Wanna get on target quick, shoot fast, and make speedy transitions on steel, yeah then this scope becomes more like a LPVO.

    I like scopes with a side focus for shooting at closer distances too. In fact I used mine 2 weeks ago to win my division and tie for high score at a Pistol Field Target event. This pcp was $3600 and is the best out there.

    It normally sits a on $3000 semi auto pcp air rifle and I haven't had more fun with a scope and gun combo yet on small steel out to 125Y. There isn't another scope on the entire market I'd put on that particular gun either!

    And I had it on my long range AR in 6mmFatRat. Somehow/being snarky, I managed to hit all the steel out to 1143Y that I shoot at with my bolt guns with 4.5-29's on top. But I admit for that upper I like more magnification and since it's heavy anyway I put 4.5-29 on it.

    So yeah this scope is worthy to use on expensive guns and it hasn't let me down in the least.

    I have a March shorty DFP 1-10 on my short AR and in some ways I prefer the HG2 over it.

    So, how's that Trijicon working out for you? I think parallax adjustment on a 2-10ish scope is over rated. There are some good ones that just plain don't need it.

    Man, Ive been considering upgrading my NX8 to a March Shorty. Do you mind if I DM you with some questions? That scope is a grail scope for me, but the reviews I've seen lead me to believe that I'd be disappointed.
