Had a question for the more experienced ELR people here. I’ve shot two ELR matches now (KRG and Nightforce, will be attending both again this year) and shoot locally at a friends place out to a mile. My buddy and I went out yesterday and the heat mirage was absolutely insane. The optics we were using was a Gen3 Razor and a SB PMii 6-36. Through the razor at a mile our target was almost impossible to keep track of. The SB was a little bit better but not by much. Here were the conditions. 50 degrees F, 85% humidity, and a north wind at 6-15 MPH. It rained all night the evening before we went out and it was overcast while we shot. We were shooting over some rolling hills with grass. It was the worst mirage I have ever seen. Is there a way to combat this? Lens filters? Changing optics? I have some experience with shooting ELR but not enough to know the answer. Thanks for any insight you may have!

The best glass you can buy will help some but not a lot. I have found shooting early in the am and sometimes later in the evening is the only time I can shoot sometimes at 1000+ especially in the summer.

I agree with this, but the problem is the matches don’t happen early in the morning, they are all day long.

You are on the right track with good glass. You may be using too much magnification. I try to keep it under 20x in the heat. 15x to 18x has worked fine for me out to 2500 yards.

I have an older SB PM2 that I used in my first ELR match in Georgia, and it was very good. The next match I shot two rifles, light and heavy, and my light gun had a gen 2 razor, which is a very good optic, but it got exposed and I realized how much better the SB was in the mirage.
I upgraded to two of the SB 5-25x DT2+ turrets, and to mu surprise, they got exposed in the everglades heat, and my TT 5-25x was miles ahead, and my Gen3 Razor 6-36 was better than both of my newer SB PM2s.
The new SB 6-36x have fantastic glass, but I ended up selling one of my newer SB in favor of another TT 5-25x.

Back your magnification off, if you are running 30 or 36x.

About the magnification yes I did back it off. I usually only shoot between 15-20x.

How close to the ground are your targets? Out in the Nevada desert we had the target as high as we could get it off the ground on T posts, and that helped a bit.

That's crazy mirage downrange, and the only thing I can suggest is to try even lower magnification
