    Hunting round decision

Easy question. You have a long action...go 30-06, 26" barrel. If you handload, you can get Barnes TTSX or any other 180gr flavors at 2,800ft/s -2,900ft/s easy...should get you well beyond 500yards. And when you get ready for a longer distance, well, just dial more clicks on your scope. If...

    Loads for 30-06

Oregon, I believe it was 3.349"OAL which translates to 35thousands off the lands. That's the key thing to remember...distance off the lands. Don't worry too much about the OAL as long as you are not jammed. Some propose starting with bullet jam...i personally dont like the idea...nothing...

    28" barrel .308 win

Masked, Here's what i now know about you 1. You don't know what a theory is. 2. You don't know how a theory is applied in real life or accounted for. 3. You've never shot competitively... at long range...or at any distance of note 4. You make no attempt get educated before hitting the "reply...

    28" barrel .308 win

Um, Firstly, thanks for not being easily offended. It's a little difficult to argue with you cause you are now back-pedaling. Anchoring your barrel selection to something such as a highly theoretical and changing variable such as powder burn is a terrible way to select a barrel length...

    28" barrel .308 win

All right Masked. You win. I loose. Ya happy? OP, sorry to have crapped all over your thread. Your 28" barrel will be just fine. Let us know how she shoots after you've developed a load.

    28" barrel .308 win

Not trying to be a douche but my back ground is chemical engineering. I'm very familiar with physics, physical chemistry, and combustion reactions. You are arguing Theory, not real life. In theory, things work out the way you and other have outlined...you can even run a program such as...

    28" barrel .308 win

Masked, You are referencing theory in your argument. I'm referencing real-life application. You keep referring to powder burn and some magical optimal barrel length. That argument is bullshit. Your optimum barrel length will change with bullet weight, powder type, powder charge, outside air...

    GAP-10 "Finicky chamber"?

Why i'd recommend the syrac ordnance click adjustable gas block. Gas Blocks | Syrac Ordnance While I have no experience with this product, i do have experience with your run of the mil low-pro adjustable gas blocks...they suck. The screws back out overtime or fall off completely, and they...

    GAP-10 "Finicky chamber"?

You guessed right lte82. OP, what your rifle needs is an adjustable gas block. If you are ok with lukewarm (close range) loads, then just shoot the recommended ammo. But if you want to take your rifle out at distance, an adjustable gas block is a must.

    28" barrel .308 win

D.ID, I have no doubt your short barrel shoots nice groups at 100yards, and that you have no trouble hitting large targets at extended distances. However, the fact of the matter is that your short barrel is not and never will be a match winning barrel no matter who makes it. I invite you to...

    Loads for 30-06

Oregon 700, Your 168gr load at 2,860ft/s is not "hot". I can get 168gr SMKs almost that fast from an M1A...a .308 semi-auto. If you want to stick with your 168SMK load, you are at least 1.0-1.5gr below your high node (high velocity with accuracy). With a 30-06, you should be able to get...

    28" barrel .308 win

those people are idiots. They are the types that tell you how well their 16" .308s shoot at long range but you'll never see them at a match or beyond the 25 yard range.

    A real budget R700 build

Chaseerickson12, You need to define what you mean by "long shots on elk". Long shots to me is 1,000yards and over. As someone who has hunted Elk in the Wyoming bighorn mountains, you don't want a 20" anything if you are planning to take "long shots" on Elk. What you want is a rifle paired...

    185gr Berger VLD + H-4350 OCW; 30-06

Just performed a search...no reliable info on 215gr Bergers in an -06...might be time to post usable info for everyone to use. Speaking of which, i need to copy and past the info above into the "Loads for 30-06" thread in the Reloading Depot.

    185gr Berger VLD + H-4350 OCW; 30-06

Well, the squadded practice did not go as i had planned. There were only four(4) of us, we all shot on the same targets, and I shot from prone slung position. Yes, i forgot to grab my secondary range bag which has my sandbags. The session was very helpful. I got to confirm the velocity over...
