Rifle Scopes Could someone explain to me what the focal plane (First and Second)?

For example: Wind holdoffs, in general, and especially when quickly transitioning between targets at very different ranges (dialing wind sucks time and is error prone under time pressure, and full magnification is often not desirable). Movers would be another example.

Rifle Scopes Could someone explain to me what the focal plane (First and Second)?

That's funny, I benefit from FFP nearly every time I take my rifle out, and very, very rarely (match stage requires) do I use it for ranging. Just because the kind of shooting you do does not benefit from FFP (or you don't understand or choose not to utilize the full benefits of FFP) does not...

    College diet/workout help?

I dropped about 45 lbs in the past year (225+ to 180 and way stronger)... The gym stuff is good and vital... Make sure to make most of your time there. And don't do pure cardio.. Get your heart rate up and keep it there doing strength stuff, your heart and lungs don't know the difference, do...

Electronic hearing protection is damaging your hearing (range report)

I'll concede the point on .50 and such -- it sounded like you were claiming that suppressors in general do nothing for recoil.

Electronic hearing protection is damaging your hearing (range report)

You've apparently never used a can?...

    260 rem in 30.06 action?

Yeah, nothing wrong with .260, but if you're going with a long action anyway, you might consider something that will take full advantage of the extra length (without getting too exotic, something like a 6.5x55 or .284 win with the chamber cut to make the most of the ample mag length).

    Not happy with Kestrel!!!!!

Contact the battery company, the decent ones will pay for devices damaged by their batteries if they do that... do you have the leaky/corroded batts?

    Help With Overall Case Length

If you have a factory rifle, your readings may be correct... (not uncommon for factory rifles to have ridiculously long chambers -- one of the many reasons a custom tube can make a big difference).

F T/R Competition Question for the XLR Chassis Owners

Hmm, after looking at the dimensions of that thing more closely, not sure whether it would actually get you any higher... but anyway, you get the idea, taller bag.

F T/R Competition Question for the XLR Chassis Owners

There is extra room in the tab bag.. once you "take up" the extra room, either from the stock pushing down into it, or by squeezing it with your support hand (or, typically, some combination of the two to achieve the proper height), it becomes firm. I suspect the TAB might be a little short at...

    Hello from Washington State!

Howdy! Welcome to the addiction. You'll want to keep tabs on the following threads: http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/showthread.php?t=9654 (started out as 'Western Washington', but has become sort of an unofficial statewide SH community thread -- also one of the most posted on threads on...

    Hard to chamber a round.

Looks to me like the bullet is jamming into the lands pretty good there --- I bet that's the problem. If it was headspace preventing you from closing the bolt and not the bullet, I wouldn't expect you would have been able to imbed that much. (depending on what kind of ammo you actually want...

    Hard to chamber a round.

If it's not headspace, the COAL of the round could conceivably be longer than your chamber .... you can put some sharpie on the bullet, try to chamber the round, carefully extract the round, and see if the sharpie is all rubbed off from being jammed up against and into the lands.

F T/R Competition Question for the XLR Chassis Owners

I use a "pillow" style bag with my XLR w/ tac stock (mine's TAB gear: https://www.riflesonly.com/pro-shop/tactical-gear/tab-rear-bag.html ) -- works well for me as I use bag position (forward and back along the slope of the tac buttstock) and orientation for course tuning and "squeeze" to fine...

Rifle Scopes Red dot backup on scope or rail?

Ah apologies, was assuming more precision long range focused shooting. Frankly, I think 1-6x would have been a better choice given your stated objectives (or better yet one of the USO 1-8x for that kind of money). For an AR setup for magnified optic + RDS, the forward set 45-degree offset...

    Midway Hacked?

If you use a card at all these days (especially, but not necessarily limited to online purchases), odds are pretty high that eventually your card will be compromised at some point or another. (As a sys admin, I'd say MOST companies out there, and nearly all smaller ones, simply do not have the...

Rifle Scopes Red dot backup on scope or rail?

Yeah, as mentioned above, I find the concept far more applicable as a 'sighting device' for finding targets in your main optic quickly. I use this: http://wiebad.com/zen/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20&products_id=45&zenid=433bc99718ecdef0dc3e2725e485cb50 That one is nice because you...

    Cross sticks or tall bipod?

You'll find a tripod much more stable and versatile, at the cost of weight that you have to lug around, and possibly slower to deploy depending on the circumstances... if you are fit enough to carry what you have to, go tripod and sticks to have more options. Lots of guys around here use...

Advanced Marksmanship bore-center to scope-center measurement - VITAL to long range shooting solutions

Original post is a "bit" of an exaggeration... for example: with my rifle data (.260), a full quarter-inch change in bore height change equates to less than .1 mil change @ 1000 yards. If you have a way to measure it within .1", good for you -- but eyeballing it with a ruler will get you...
