Thinking of finally making the jump from M14 type to AR10 type, need advice

Thanks for the replies, you have certainly given me some things to think about and some more rifles to consider. Unfortunately I don't reload (I simply don't have the time to shoot if I also reload) so I will need to stick to .308/7.62x51.

Thinking of finally making the jump from M14 type to AR10 type, need advice

Hi, I recently took a "DMR" class with an M14 (LRB semi-auto). In the class I was shooting under 2 MOA with occasional 1 to 1.5 MOA 5 shot groups at 100 yards. That's about what I expected from the gun since it just has a standard profile 18.5" chrome lined barrel and a GI fiberglass stock...

Fieldcraft Unexpectectedly need to make a hide for a precision rifle class, any recommendations?

Well I'm pleased to report that the hide was a success. I set up the hide 175 yards to the northeast of the target and "won" the competition between my teammates for seeing who could get the closest while avoiding detection. Five spotters with binocs and spotting scopes on top of the target...

Fieldcraft Unexpectectedly need to make a hide for a precision rifle class, any recommendations?

Thanks for the recommendations. The lady's hose is something I will definitely pick up. Nah, we don't really have to worry about being detected after we shoot I don't think, and the firing point is wherever we choose it to be from. I'd estimate that it's a 50 acre area. It's a square with...

Fieldcraft Unexpectectedly need to make a hide for a precision rifle class, any recommendations?

Hi, I'm taking a precision rifle class and as part of the class need to make a hide and attempt to evade detection. We are setting up to hit a target that will be 100-600 yards away depending on where we choose to make the hide. Basically the area I have to hide in looks like this: except...

Is a detachable magazine worth the increase in weight on a precision/hunting rifle?

All I did was put a scope and scope mount on it (Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x 30mm, Badger 20 MOA base and Badger rings). That adds 2 pounds. Actually I can use my 18.5" LRB M14 as my lightweight hunting rifle if I need to. It weighs 8.4 lbs unloaded. I killed two deer last season with it...

Is a detachable magazine worth the increase in weight on a precision/hunting rifle?

All right, you felllows convinced me, I ordered the M5 bottom metal today. I'll send the stock to badger for inletting and also have them put a tactical bolt knob on while there (I have to use the two finger method to clear my scope currently, and have had a few short strokes under pressure in...

Is a detachable magazine worth the increase in weight on a precision/hunting rifle?

Thanks for all the responses so far! Wow, that's the first time I've heard that. Most everything I've read says that fiberglass bedding the hs precision stock gives 10-20% accuracy improvements. Good to know that's not always the case, thanks!

Tell me I'm going to love it.....Smith Enterprises Brake

Well I haven't compared mine with any other brakes but I am happy with mine. I ran it during a 500 round class and was glad I had it, even though the instructor poo-pooed brakes a little bit and demonstrated their drawbacks by having us do some shooting on our sides. Compared to without, the...

Is a detachable magazine worth the increase in weight on a precision/hunting rifle?

Hi, I have a Remington 700 police LTR w/ a Leupold Mark IV 4.5-14x scope. It currently weights 9 lbs 7 oz without suppressor and bipod. It averages about 1 MOA at 100 yards with me shooting 175 FGMM through it. I am considering sending the rifle to GA Precision to have it fiberglass...

    Night Vision Pulsar N550 Digisight

Re: Pulsar N550 Digisight I need an IR illuminator for my 550. Can anyone recommend some? I'd like to be able to make shots out to 150 yards with it. Right now, with just the built in IR I'd say it's good to about 75 yards on a dark night. Beyond that you don't really get eye reflections...

Best rear sand bag for field use?

Re: Best rear sand bag for field use? The Triad Tapered rear bag, in my opinion: http://www.triadtactical.com/Triad-Tapered-Rear-Bag.html I used one at a weekend long range shooting clinic and found it to be highly beneficial.

After class with 700P LTR, need upgrade opinions

Re: After class with 700P LTR, need upgrade opinions Thanks for the input so far. The possibility of short stroking is why I'm looking at a bolt lift too. The instructor watching me during one of the malfunctions said he didn't think I was short stroking but I guess it can be hard to...

Gunsmithing Need a Pro Fiberglass Stock Refinisher/Painter

Hi, I have an old M14 USGI fiberglass stock that is a little beat up finish wise and would like to have it repainted solid black along with the handguard. I am terrible at painting plus I live in an apartment and don't really have a good location for it. Can anyone recommend a...

After class with 700P LTR, need upgrade opinions

Hi, Just finished an intro precision rifle class with my stock 700P LTR. The only mod I made prior to the class was having the barrel threaded and installing a Smith Enterprise USCG muzzle brake. I was pleased with the rifle for the most part, shooting slightly less than an inch at 100 yards...

    Rain gear and backpack question

Hi, I'm new to long range shooting so go easy I just took my first precision rifle class, shooting out to 1000 yards and had reasonable success. I received a "qual" on the course of fire out to 600 on stationary targets and 1 mph movers. Anyway, I didn't have a real shooting pack for the...

Suppressors Smith Enterprise Wind Talker .30 cal suppressor?

Re: Smith Enterprise Wind Talker .30 cal suppressor? What's with the all the condescension "RollingThunder51"? If you don't want to help, just do me a favor and don't hit reply. If by "a lot more", you mean an adjustable gas plug, whooptie-do, yes I know that they are sometimes required...

Suppressors Smith Enterprise Wind Talker .30 cal suppressor?

Re: Smith Enterprise Wind Talker .30 cal suppressor? Thanks for the responses. I have pretty much decided just to go with an AAC cyclone for my 700. There is a guy making adapters 5/8-24 adapters for the M14's so there's that option later if the time comes. I was also looking into the AAC...
