If people had paid attention to John Brown when he first hacked the heads off of some pro-slavery men... and before Harpers Ferry (which was the spark that got the Southern Militias worked up), the slavery question might have had a soft landing. Neutralize John Brown, possibly avoid Civil War.

If people had taken Hitler seriously when he outlined his plans in Mein Kampf... he could have been neutralized. It might have saved our ancestors a lot of trouble.

If the Shah had listened to the Ayotollah Khomemeni's B.S. from Paris in the 1970's and gotten rid if him... there likely would not have been a spark that has put the mid-East in (even more) turmoil for decades.

If, in dozens of cases, we had incarcerated potential mass-shooters when they gave every indication that they were going to be mass shooters... would we have avoided many of them?

It's an interesting historical question, always, because revisionist or 'possible' histories are fraught with peril. Some argue that different sparks or different tyrants would have arisen. Others say that 20/20 hindsight is all well and good... but that identifying people before they commit their heinous atrocities is very difficult if not impossible. And that you can't be sure that they would have 'done' what they say they are going to do.

That said, we are a nation of laws. And we have laws against things like inciting and conspiracy to commit bad acts... When does the justice system take seriously the babblings of someone on Interwebs... and elevate it to the level of actions worthy of incarceration or other action (with due process, of course!)

Seems to me that a lot of these people... are walking a fine line right now. And though I am not a legal scholar, the question does come up! If a columnist calls for bombings... are they reaching the level at which they are actually fomenting the actions? If a Congresswoman calls for stalking and harrassment, is she crossing a bright line, legally. Certainly one can argue she crossed one morally and ethically, but when does the legal system kick in?

Or does it? Do we get back to the idea that there is one legal system for "Well-meaning progressives" but if someone who owns a MAGA hat says a word, they are instantly charged with intent or similar.

Wars of words are fine. Everyone gets butthurt... who cares. Real wars are nasty. Civil wars, especially in the modern era, are worse. See the above poster describing killing fields, pits full of the dead and limbs chopped off. And especially in 21st Century America, we don't have a Mason/Dixon line to divide secession states from Union States. Every town, every city, every street and every neighborhood would potentially be a little ethnic-cleansing of its own... with the word ethnic replaced largely by the word "political."

Everyone is jumping up and down predicting a Civil War. Everyone is saying 'there will be a spark.' I'll argue that we are watching idiots lighting campfires in a dry prairie every single day. On Twitter, Facebook, Forums, CNN...

Do we need the modern equivalent of Smokey the Bear to come along and stamp this out? Is it even possible in a nation where speech is protected to such a degree that even speech designed to limit speech... is protected?

I believe we have the tools and due process to handle it... to create a soft landing. But, damn, it's hard to stay optimistic!

I am amazed by the number of well thought people on this board and it is refreshing to see. That being said we all have to be aware of what the aggressive progressives are saying and what happened in the run offs last night. Now is not the time to get angry because that can cloud judgement, rather we all need to be fully aware of what is happening around us and start preparing just in case things start to escalate.

I also think we have to accept that the democrats/progressives are not going to be held accountable for what they say. As long as mentally bereft genetic defects like Maxine Waters can incite their sheep behind the safety of their office they will. That is not going to change any time soon. People that want their independence, rights and religious freedom have been losing their rights for a lot longer and should be much angrier. The difference between the two groups is that conservatives realize the cost of that anger while liberals typically do not.
