I need to add a base to my Savage 10 FP (308) and am wondering whether it should be canted or not?????

I also shoot a DPMS 308 and am buying a NightForce NXS scope to be used initially on both of them. My thinking was to mount the scope an a unimount and be able to move it from one gun to the other easily. I assume that with the NF scope, I do not need a canted base, but should I put one on anyway so that if I end up using another scope I am OK???

Both guns will be used in F Class 600 yd competition, and Maybe out to 1000 yd

Re: 0 or 20 MOA base??

Thanks for the link.

My understanding is that the NF scope has 100MOA of adjustment, so will the cant be superfluous in that case??

100 MOA over all, but in theory you will start at 50MOA which is in the middle (50MOA up and 50MOA down). Then there will be more adjustments needed to get your 100y zero which may put you at around 40MOA of elevation left. Then....depending on what bullet you chose and how velocity you're pusing it you will have used about 30-35 MOA to get to 1000y, this leaves you around 5 MOA.

Again in theory, it could be a bit better or a bit worse. I'd get the 20 MOA base because once you get 1000 you're going to want to go to 1100 and then 1200, and then....

Interesting info Mr Ballistic...

let me ask this...

would I be better off, since I will be switching guns, to get a unimount bast that has 20 MOA of cant on it instead....since the DPMS has no cant to it??????

The Uni-mount I have for my SASS is way to high to use on any of my bolt guns. I would put a 20 MOA riser on the AR, and use standard rings on the scope to switch back and forth.

+1
And make sure you do put the 20moa mount on your rifle.
Depending on what model of NF you are looking at getting will determine how much travel you have.
Enjoy.

That's the answer right there. 20 MOA base on bolt gun, 20-22 MOA riser on gas gun and a standard set of rings at the height it will work on the bolt gun. It's what I do with my GP-10 and I can take the scope off and put it on a bolt gun without any problems.

Re: 0 or 20 MOA base??

Yup. If you have the high rise upper like that then I wouldn't put on a riser. Just get the right ring height for the bolt gun.

It really doesn't matter if one set up has a 20 MOA and one doesn't. You will need to rezero when changing the scope to another rifle anyways. Just log what the changes are going one to the other and you can dial those back on when changing and be very close.

Like the others stated if you got a mount it would be pretty high, but it's still doable to move from gun to gun.

Look at the LT158 Larue mount, this model has 10MOA.
