I don't like to brag about my kids publicly but I think in this case, he deserves it. As posted on another local forum.
My son got the F class bug and wanted to try some of these matches. Anyone that knows him, knows he's a pretty darn good shot on various platforms. However, we never did 1,000 until this Feb. He tried his 1st match and had a rough start getting on paper. Once he did, he did pretty decent for the 1st time out, especially at 14 years old. He missed the 1st relay so we never shot a full match.
Yesterday he shot in the ORSA match in Oak Ridge. Only 2nd time at 1,000 and 1st full match. On his 1st relay he shot a 182. Few 8's but mostly 9's and 10's. I made him a bet that when/if he ever did better than 500 total for a match, I would buy him lunch wherever he wants. After yesterday, I have to pay up. He shot a total score of 522. He got in the bullseye four times with a 4X's. He made all his own elevation and windage corrections. He got a tip from a paired shooter and started watching the other shooters where they were correcting.
The gun used was a box stock Savage 10BA. Ammo was Southwest Ammo 175g SMK. We used some of my hand loads at the end to test against the SWA but I have a bunch of the SWA left, so that's what he used.
So I am extremely proud of him and think he did a fantastic job at any age for a starter, let alone 14. That match is extremely well run and moves at a good pace. Lastly, the people there were great.
