Hi Guys,

Most factory 1-12 22-250 won't shoot anything over 55gr heads.

Anyone have good results with 1-7 or 1-8 twist and VLD heads in their 22-250 bolt gun ?

I had a factory Savage VLP 1x9 that shot 70 grain VLDs at 3450 fps and 75 grain Amax's at 3375 fps. To say successful would be an absolute understatement. You're stepping into a whole new world with a fast twist 22-250. They are fantastic! I wouldn't even consider owning a 22-250 with anything slower than 1x9 after getting a taste of the true LR capabilities of the 22-250.

A 1x8 would be perfect for anything heavier than 75 grain Amax's.

What kind of barrel life does one see with a fast twist 22-250?

I mean 80gr A-Max @ 3200fps would be an absolute laser to 1000yd but I'd think that'd burn 'em out pretty quick...

About 7 years back I built a 22 x 47 Lapua which has about the same case capacity as the 22-250 with a 1-8" twist barrel to shoot 80 g bullets and it did that fantastic. Try Lapua 22-250 brass now that they make it and I think you will have a gun that shoots so well that you will ask "Why didn't I do this sooner?"

wwbrown,

I have been shooting one for about 10 yrs. for long range coyote hunting. Once you try it you will never go back. Also launches rockchucks into outer space. My favorite bullet is the 75 A-max. An absolute bomb.

Some of the br guys claim they're done at a 1000. That may be true, but mine have gone twice that or better by watching barrel heat. I've always run the AI version with slow powders.

What your thinking is what I pondered for a LONG time!!! I ended up going with a 243 chambered for the DTAC in a Brux 7.5 twist @ 25". The 250 will never be a 243 and this way I got more barrel life.......

Re: 1-8 Twist 22-250 to use VLD - anyone shoot this ?

My son has one on a Ruger No1V laminate with a 26" long Krieger barrel. That barrel had about 1400 rounds through it as a 223Rem match rifle, about half of them were 80 gr bullets.

He has killed several prairie dogs with it from 600-800 yards with 80gr Sierra match bullets. To date the total round count is about 2200, with some throat erosion, if he keeps it as a 22/250, we will need to have it set back an rechambered in the next couple of hundred rounds.

More likely it will be bored out to a 338 Lapua sometime soon.

Great concept, the 22/250 really needs 65-75gr bullets to reach it's full potential.

Re: 1-8 Twist 22-250 to use VLD - anyone shoot this ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but sadly even with an 80gr VLD, the 22-250 can only hold its own up to 300 yards with the larger bore diameters, in terms of susceptibility to wind drift. At 1000 yards an 80gr VLD from a 22-250 has about 33 % more wind drift that a 115gr VLD from a 243 Win. (Roll on 375 Cheytac......).

26" barrel and Varget with 80 AMAX, 3200fps is easily achieved.

I would expect barrel life to be 1500 rounds.

Winds is close to .243 with DTAC's all the way to 1000yds.
