#1 accessory for .308

Re: #1 accessory for .308

Just to get by A good trigger if it didnt come with one.Mine has a JP single stage!! Most of them come floated already. That would be a good place to start.

That would be my vote.

Re: #1 accessory for .308

"Accessory" is a pretty broad term. Assuming you already have a rifle in good working order, free-floated, good glass/mount/rings, and all the basics covered, I would look at upgrading or buying:

1) a really good trigger (I like the Geissele triggers for the best 2-stage triggers on the market);

2) some Magpul LR20 PMAGs;

3) an Atlas bipod.

Again, depending on your rifle, how it is setup, etc., there may be things you should be looking at before any "accessories."

Re: #1 accessory for .308

This sounds like a question I would get from my wife "do these shoes go with this shirt" or what ever the hell she says. Its a rifle you dont need to add stuff to just because its there. Add things because they help you perform a specific task. If your task is making people think that your ops are blacker than their ops then by all means let no section of rail go unused.

Re: #1 accessory for .308

i know i don't have many postings...but i just had a similar discussion with a friend of mine...get a good case to keep it in, one that is lockable and can take some abuse...and don't skimp on paying the price a good case demands...harddig, pelican, skb, whatever you prefer...you invested quite a bit so keep it safe...other than that i completely agree with CPT Moroni

A scope would be my suggestion.

Re: #1 accessory for .308

It may be more interesting to put the question the other way round?

What accessories should I not buy for my nice new 308 that the gun trade are trying to get me to waste my money on?

On my conveyor belt tonight.....

A harris bipod

A sound moderator

An inclinometer

A level gauge

A muzzle brake

Re: #1 accessory for .308

Unlless you are trying to kit out a mall ninja, zombie slaying, bedwetters fantasy to impress your mates (or your in a job where you actually need IR/NV/Grips/weapons lights/tactical sharpened muzzle brakes/medieval spiked butt plates and the like) once you've got a good trigger and barrel, better glass and some good iron sights, a bipod (or a sling) I'd say save your money and buy ammo instead!

Re: #1 accessory for .308

Are you familiar with the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"?
wink.gif

My rifles' are tools designed to fulfill a function - not to provide eye candy!

What I am saying is (unless you are LE or Military and have a specific need for a specific item) for me (a) "less is more" and (b) why overburden yourself with expensive crap that doesn't help you shoot any better?

But...each to their own!

Re: #1 accessory for .308

have you equipped a holy barrel shroud, a ridiculously oversized brake, ard (look it up), shoot away muzzle plugs, fake supressor can, off canted reflex sight, coriolis compensator(check at cabelas), stock purse(google blackhawk), mildot countersniper scope, mildot master, sliderule, ti calculator, batteries for everything, laser rangefinder thingy, gps, kestrel weather station, angle cosine indicator, lifesize cardboard billy zane, 5 sherpas to cartry all this crap, bayonet, make that 2 bayonets, a multitool and field gunsmithing kit, chronograph, portable reloading station complete with runout gauge...well that oughtta get you started...pm me when you make it thru that shortlist.

Re: #1 accessory for .308

I found a bipod to be a game changer for me. I was used to have inifite time at the range messing with bags, but in the field time is of the essence. So learn the bipod. Most guys here seem to like 6-9", with 9-12 2nd. I actually like 13-27, since hunting you need elevation, or sitting shots. And you can still learn basics at the range with it. Good luck!

In case there is difficulty reading all that, here's a well-accessorized AR visual (note the importance of optics in the equation):

Re: #1 accessory for .308

This is all you need, in this order, if you don't have it...

Decent scope (a Super Sniper 3-9 or 10X is hard to beat) and mount/rings.

Bipod

Good trigger

Ammo

Shoot it for a while, and then you'll learn what you need from there.

Re: #1 accessory for .308

Seriously, get the absolute minimum amount of items necessary to get out and actually shoot (ie. ammo, scope, bipod of some sort, cleaning supplies). A good case, range bag, extra mags, and possibly an ammo carrier are helpful, but not absolutely essential. Even reasonable targets can easily be made with materials you probably already have at home, and hung up with duct tape or a stapler once at the range.

If you're like most, you will accumulate all of that other cool-looking (but of limited usefulness) stuff as you shoot, and later end up wishing you had spent your $$$ more wisely on the most important items (ie. things you absolutely have to have to shoot such as ammo, scope, bipod of some sort, cleaning supplies).

BTW: ORD, I understand they're making making small wheels now that can be used to replace the feet on that bipod. Might be useful for moving that monstrosity around (LOL).

Re: #1 accessory for .308

You'd be amazed at some of the dumbasses with AR-type rifles and the dumbass things they seem to attach to every square inch of rail they can get their grubby hands on (99.9% of which won't help one damn bit in terms of making the rifle or the idiot squeezing the trigger more accurate or reliable)!

The thing to take away from all of this is KISS!!! You don't need a bunch of "accessories" for your rifle to make it a good rifle. Spend your money (and time) investing in things like good triggers, good glass/mounts/rings, and ammo. Spend lots of quality time shooting and mastering your technique shooting a semi-auto 308.

I don't know that "small" wheels would cut it!! Finding a case for it would probably be a real PITA too!!!

Re: #1 accessory for .308

I don't think he wanted to hear what people are saying so go ahead and cram all the shit you can on your rails. You have been given quite a list, everything you could possible want. Then go out and take your new rifle out for a walk. Carry it in your arms for just one mile then make up your mind. I am a "nay sayer" though so what do I know?

Re: #1 accessory for .308

I just traded for a DPMS Oracle Saturday. Already had a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x scope and a QD mount, so I slapped it on Saturday night, took it to the range Sunday morning.

Threw a few reman 168gr's downrange at 50 yds to get it sighted in. Moved to 100 yds with FGGM 168's and let fly. I was happy with the results.

I know I need a bipod.

And a different stock. I was using a rear hold off the bench and accidentally collapsed the stock when I touched off a shot....ouch!! Nice scope cut...

And more ammo.

I'm pretty much High Drag, Low Speed though

Re: #1 accessory for .308

The absolute minimum required to shoot is ammo, rifle and target.

I suggest you START there and add what you find necessary.

Lot of guys out there can't shoot for shit and then buy a boatload of crap to compensate for it....because it HAS to be the rifle or gear right? It can't be a lack of proper execution of the fundamentals.

Re: #1 accessory for .308

Even though I don't think what you bought came with sights, I'm not going to say scope or irons. Buy a single stage press if you don't have one, crank out some ammo for yourself, and shoot out that barrel.

Re: #1 accessory for .308

to the op I have a rock river arms lar -8 when I got it I put a mag-pul prs stock on it , railed hand guards and a bipod . after a few trips to the woods I put the original furniture back on the rifle , ditched the bipod and installed a 3x9 scope and a good sling . now it is easier to carry , not near as many things to get hung up in saw briars or honey suckle and I wont be needing rotator cuff surgery . I would say spend the money on a quality optic and shoot the rifle alot after 1000 rounds you will start to figure out what you need.

Re: #1 accessory for .308

A little back ground on me... I am a Combat Vet in the USMC!! I have shot many rounds, I have built my bolt action LR gun and now I want start a semi-auto package!
I was hopeing for resposes like, "I bought a heavier buffer spring," or the DPMS has a crappy trigger that you want to replace right away... none of this parenting bull sh#@t that i'm getting from peopole telling me what NOT to do!!!
Thanks!!!

Re: #1 accessory for .308

I have an Armalite AR-10, 20" barrel. I have a VLTOR EMod stock, and IRA G2 trigger. First things first, get the necessities- BUIS, good trigger of your choice, and a new stock, possibly new forearm if you want something different. That will take care of the aesthetics and make you more comfortable. Then go from there.
