i just got a 260 Rem in a shillen and i was doing some testing with different powders and came across something special or at least i thought it was.

This is doing a 1 shot per 1/2 grain to find max load. Has anyone ever had a 1" group when testing across 5 grains of powder? i know 1" is big for precision shooting but not if it is over 5 grains of powder.

H4831SC - 42gr to 47

i will have a full write up from start to finish once i am done with load development with IMR 4451, H4831SC, and Reloader 17 for the 260 rem with the 130gr VLD hunting.

How far were you shooting at? I once was shooting at 100 yds with my new TRG-42 and clocking the rounds in 5 shot strings. 250s at 2900ish. The first four in the string were clocking close and where I thought them to be but one pegged like 3200 fps! The group size was a quarter. I still don't know what happened, but perhaps more than a 'few' extra grains went into that one!

At that minor distance, velocity didn't play a role in accuracy, but if I was shooting at 1000 yds, there would be issues with POI. That was a big difference in velocity.

it was at 100 yards. most of the testing that i have been doing with my 308 prior still showed vertical stringing even if it is 2"

i do know what you are saying as far as velocity and 1000 yards is concerned. my velocity ranged from 2500 to high 2900 without pressure signs so i am going to push it into the 48 and 49 grains if everything still holds good on pressure.

dont have any that span 5 grains, but got these 2 from some load work up i did recently, some barrels just like anything you throw at em...my old 223 was similar

40.4-42.4 was 6 rounds of different charges in 22 creed, 80 vlds

This one was 8 rounds of 1 charge each from 42.5-45.6 w/ 308, 155 amax

very nice. i think the only reason i might not move forward with the powder that did that is the velocity was really low. i was getting 2500-2800 at the top where as 4451 and Reloader 17 was in the 3K's to high 2900's

When I ran a pressure test for my .243 AI. All of them went into less than .5 MOA group. Then when I ran my OCW through that range, I had a several 3 shot groups that were 1 moa or a little more. It was just coincidence. I ended up having to find a node and tune seating depth before I found a sub half moa load.

that is what i am thinking is going to happen this weekend when i go test it more. i had some very nice velocity readings that grouped together so that is what i am going to fine tune next at the velocities i want. no reason to fine tune a 2500 fps load that wont be able to get to a 1000.
