10/22 Barrel Length

Re: 10/22 Barrel Length

A longer barrel will make it quieter. Barrels in the range of 24-30 inches will be almost suppressor quiet with subsonic ammo.
Add a can and it will be inaudible. Keep the barrel as long as you can....no pun intended.

Re: 10/22 Barrel Length

Aguila Colibri ammo comes out of my 27 inch barrel at 458 fps (average). It is completely silent, except for the "click" and the sound of the bullet hitting the target.
The same ammo fired through a 21 inch barrel has a bit of an actual report, and averages 512 fps, and through a 4 inch revolver averages 552 fps. The sound of this very light ammo through a 4 inch revolver is similar to a subsonic round through a rifle.
By the way, this particular ammo uses primer only, and is not particularly accurate, but it works 100% for mice inside 20 yards. Any farther, and I don't know about the accuracy or effectiveness.

Re: 10/22 Barrel Length

As luck would have it, I have a Ruger 10/22 with a 16.5 inch threaded E.R. Shaw bull barrel....and a Mite. Running Remington bulk pack there is quite a bit of report. Go to WalMart and buy a box of 50 subsonic rounds for $3.50 and you will giggle while you shoot it. With the subsonic rounds you will hear the bolt cycle and the bullet hit. If you are redneck like me and make an insert to keep the bolt from cycling, people will see you holding a gun and wonder why you are laughing so loud.

As for rodents, I can tell you that I shot, killed and took pictures of 3 armadillos in my yard last summer. All were shot in the middle of the night and nobody heard nothing. Buah ha ha ha ha.

Re: 10/22 Barrel Length

I had a butler creek fluted stainless barrel on mine for years. It was very accurate but heavy. I believe it was 22". I just swapped out for a Tacsol Barrel, I think it's around 16", and have been very happy with it.

Re: 10/22 Barrel Length

When I was putting my CZ 453 together I spent a lot of time reading up on rimfires. The info I found indicated that for a 22lr there is really no increase in MV beyond 12 inches or so. Long barrels are great for sight radius, but if you are scoped it really doesn't matter.
