1000 yard rifle in a 308???

I'm looking to buy a 308 that will shoot very accurately at 1k yards. I have about 1k budget for just the gun. I have been looking at the Savage 12 bench. Any opinions would be helpful

please keep in mind I'm new to long range shooting so I might not have all of the terminology correct.

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

Like has been previously posted. It being able to accurately place rounds at that distance is more about who is driving the rifle then the rifle itself. But a short list of rifles to look into:

Remington 5R
Savage 10/110 FCP
Tika Tac or Super Varmint

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

They all shoot to 1000...accurate? Well that is determined by a lot but 3 main components would be the shooter, ammo (reloading the best option) and Optics.

I guess what I am trying to say is there is no magic gun out there that you can get behind and be accurate to 1000...the whole system needs to be aligned.

for factory guns I am a sendero or 5r fan...just hard to beat for the price.

Assuming the other two factors remain the same, the most often variable factor is the shooter. Dont take it the wrong way, everyone has good days and bad days. 5R is a good option. Savage rifles are good also but they lack the after market products for "pimpimg up" your rifle compared to Remy action. Good luck

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

I can hit a 18" plate at 915 using a buddy's custom 308. Hand loads and a Horus Vision Predator scope. I shoot 8" plate steel at 500 yards using my Next Generation Arms AR-15 very customized with a Hours Vision Raptor scope.

Custom guns will always have an advantage over factory and can absolutely cover up some of our mistakes...you asked about factory guns which tend to be less forgiving and not as accurate...again they can all shoot to 1000, but the lower in quality rifle you go, the more you will rely on reloading and your shooting ability..

no one accused you of being a bad shooter everyone is making the point its less about the gun and more the componets behind it. so there are a lot of good choices out there for you

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

I get what you're trying to ask here, you need equipment first.Another thing that may help is if you can tell us are you shooting strictly from a bench or do you plan to carry it some? Personally I like Savage....well made, accurate as any factory gun, good pricing, and I'm a fan of the trigger.IF this is gonna be a bench gun go for the 12 Bench, or maybe the 12 F/TR.They are HEAVY sticks, so if you plan on carrying at all you might want to look at the 10 FCP with either the HS Precision stock or McMillan.Good luck it's very addicting!

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

I know you said you only have 1k to spend bug if you save a little bit more there's a company in the Snipers Hide: Commercial Sales section is selling the FN A3's.

They are 24" barrels, McMillan A4 stock w/spacer system and the company who is selling them are bedding them all for $1495.00

That sounds pretty good to me. If you can't do that I say get a 5R and have it bedded in the factory stock. Good luck and post pics of whatever you get.

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

Thanks, Yes it is for bench only. I live in Oregon and have a lot of BLM land to shoot at. I plan on putting on a Horus Vision Raptor scope so that is most of my total 2k overall budget. So i figured that I'd start with an accurate out of the box weapon and slowly modify it from there. I have a Savage 17hmr and love it so that is why I was looking at them. I'm totally open to looking at what ever is out there. I will be hand loading.

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

Throwing in a vote for anything savage with your budget. Great stock trigger, the accustock competes with glass bedding without you having to do anything, and even with the new smooth barrel nuts, a barrel swap is a DIY job once you have shot out your barrel and want to upgrade to match quality. Im shooting my pretty much stock 10 FCP-K 308 to 1000 this weekend. We will see how she drives! She is .4 moa to as far as I've shot(225 yards), so I hope that trend continues.

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

Dick's Sports if there is one near you has a Savage 10fcp on sale now 799 in .308 with 22" varmint barrel and they also have a remington varmint 26"bbl for 550 with a $50 rebate they will both shoot to 1k accurately.

"customs guns will ALWAYS have an advantage" Not true with the TRG

I will put my TRG up against ANY custom gun..

With a price tag of $3,000.00 your TRG is way closer to being completely custom than it is to a basic factory rifle don't ya think :)

Re: 1000 yard rifle in a 308???

For $1k, get a Savage Precision Carbine or another accustock/accutrigger heavy barrelled rifle and a Bushnell 10x mil/mil. You'll be accurate all day long. Cant forget optics!
