I have a Winchester .243 with a 1-10 twist factory barrel and I am wondering how the 105g. A-max shoot or if they are to heavy for my barrel..
This will be for 500+ Yards.

Re: 105 A-Max .243 win 1-10 twist

I think they might be a little too heavy for the 10 twist. Try some 87grn V-Max.

Re: 105 A-Max .243 win 1-10 twist

I am using the 87grn. Vmax and the 87grn. bthp. now but I have not tried them at anything past about 300 yrds.
I loaded up the last of these bullets the other day and now I am getting ready to order more.
I have not shot this rifle in about 5 years and I thought I would see what it would do at long range..

I've found that anything over 90 gr, does not stabilize in my 243. the 87 V-Max I have had great success with all the way out to 1000 yds.
The rifle is a Howa 1500 1 in 10 twist

The 105gr A-max work great in my 1-10 twist .243. I have shot them to 600 yards so far. The best way to know if they will work for you is to load some and give them a try.

Re: 105 A-Max .243 win 1-10 twist

I have shot 100grn. spitzers (years ago) and from what I remember they worked ok in this rifle.
I may have to go ahead and try some.if nothing else it will give me an excuse to build something else to use them in..

Re: 105 A-Max .243 win 1-10 twist

You need to push that bullet very hot in order for it to stabilize the 105 AMAX. My 243 is a Remy stock with 1:9 1/8 " twist and I have to push it at least 3000 fps to get decent groupings. Just a thought.

Re: 105 A-Max .243 win 1-10 twist

they will shoot in a 9 twist no problems, if someone thinks they are shooting in a 10 twist i think their barrel must be a diferent twist to what they are thinking it is. they will shoot in a 9.25 if driven hard but if i push thenm in an identical barrel in 6mmbr they will not stabalise. As for the 100gr spitzers working they are a lot shorter and lighter than the 105gr A Max so you can not compare. use the 87's shoot the barrel out then get a 9 twist fitted the 87's will shoot well past 600 yards and that will cover you.

I think that is the answer I was looking for,a reason.some of the twist charts are not very clear.
This is an old factory Winchester varmint rifle that is a long action.
I went ahead and ordered more 87grn. v maxes.
Now if I can just burn up this barrel !

Re: 105 A-Max .243 win 1-10 twist

Maybe the solution to my problem is in this thread. Win Mod 70, 1:10 with Barnes 90X. Will not group. It's a long pill, maybe I'm not pushing it hard enough. 60's group in an inch, maybe to get 1/2 moa, I need to push them harder too??

Do most of you push loads close to or over max published??
