I am new to this site been lurking for sometime but not to shooting. I would like to get a 308 and try some long range shooting (300 to 600 yards). Really like the savage but I would like some input on what model. Cabela’s has the Choate on sale for $649.00. Is this a good choice or should I spend the extra and get a McMillan or HS Precision? I did use the search and did not find the info I was looking for.

Re: 10FCP Recommendations

i bought the mcmillan version when they first came out, very pleased with it. the mcm is a great stock but i feel it will need to be bedded. the hs has a full length aluminum bedding block, which is nice. i never cared much for the choate. some really like them. it really comes down to what stock feels best for you, but if i were to do it all over again i would get the mcm or hs.

savage make a very good, accurate rifle. i thoroughly enjoy outshooting my buddy with his $10k surgeon, us optics rifle.

Priceless...

Re: 10FCP Recommendations

I purchased one of those a year or so ago and am pleased with it. The Choate stock that comes with it is pretty darn nice for the price. It did take a bit of shooting and load development but it settled down to digesting 45.0gr Varget and a 168 SMK's. I am soon to try 155's. I did not like the 26" bbl and cut mine down to 20" and recrowned and installed a Thruster brake. I have the gun weighted with lead shot at just over 18lbs and I painted it with Krylon.

Re: 10FCP Recommendations

I got the Savage 10FCP HS .308 and never looked back. Great shooter right out of the box. Now gonna do a switch barrel in 6.5 CSS (barrel shipped today from Lothar Walther) I did have a Time & True and bolt fluting done by SSS. T&T was worth it as the bolt lift now is alot lighter. It used to be somewhat heavy. Bolt fluting done just for eye candy...wife now says I know the meaning of accessorizing.

Re: 10FCP Recommendations

I have two rifles in Choate stocks. One, an ultimate varmint stock and the other the newer tactical stock. They are ugly, a bit on the heavy side but bullet proof, with a good, full length aluminum bedding block.
They are a lot of stock for the money and they extremely well.

I also have a Remington Sendero in an HS precision stock, it also has a full length aluminum bedding block.

The McMillan is a fine stock, but usually requires bedding job to get the most out of it. Fot that kind of money, you should not have to bed the damn thing (IMHO).
I would get the Choate, HS or accustock version before the McM stock, just because.
(the 10PC in the accustock is a very fine shooter)
If I had the money I would personally opt for the one in the HS stock, if I wanted to save some money and put the extra to glass or ammo, I would go with the Choate or the 10 PC.

Check budsguns out of Paris, Ky they are sold out of most models right now, but their prices are really hard to beat and the HS stock version is very reasonable.

Re: 10FCP Recommendations

i love my HS, but if the offered the A4 instead of the A5, id be liking that better. if you think you want to upgrade the bottom metal to something like CDI, look for a 10fp, not a 10fcp. if not, get the 10fcp and some 9 round mags from sharp shooter supply. feel free to ask any other questions.

Re: 10FCP Recommendations

forgot to mention...

i bought the new bell and carlson medalist for my 10fp in 223 and i'm very impressed. full length alum bedding block, my action dropped in perfectly. this stock is for blind mag, but you can send it off to have someone inlet it for the aftermarket detach mags, such as cdi's ai mag bottom metal. of course, you will need to verify the action screw spacing before ordering a stock.

clicky

for about $215 to my door, it can't be beat.

axeman, if i understand correctly, the cdi bottom metal can be used in either the fp or fcp models with proper inletting. the only problem i have heard about is that savage has changed their actions again on the newest models out now. something about the bolt release is now a part of the triggerguard.

Re: 10FCP Recommendations

I just got a bone stock 10fp last week. I put a scope and bi pod on it for now. I will be shooting it in the next week or so I will let you know how that goes with a bone stock rifle.

you can, he does make bottom metal for both and is working to design around the latest changes. but i have the 10fcp and from a purely cash standpoint, i will buy 9 round mags from SSS since i have DBM from the factory. its just easier and cheaper to buy the 9 round mags with the factory DBM, not as cool, just cheaper. $210+$75? for CDI dbm and 1 mag vs just $75 per mag for the SSS 9 rounders that i can just use. i can get 4 mags for the cost of CDI and one mag. now if i had a 10fp and no DBM at all, CDI would be my choice and when i build another rifle i will get CDI. but buying a 10fcp and then junking the factory dbm for aftermarket is just a waste of the extra money you pay savage for that option. plus, who can you sell it too? it only fits other 10fcp's. but thats just my way of thinking. to make it more difficult, the only way to get the HS or McM stocks is with the factory DBM. so its either buy a stock aftermarket and pay dearly or get it cheaper as a factory option and then add the DBM from CDI... look at the total costs either way. know what you want to do as far as a finished project before you buy either model.

like i really want an A4. what i should have done is buy that stock, then a bare action from jim at northland, then add CDI and id have exactly what i wanted. im ok with what i have now, but knowing now what i know, i would have built on the bare action and gone A4 in my choice of colors with the shillen select barrel along with CDI. thats next on my list
