Hey guys and gals,

was wondering if I’d be a such a severe disadvantage with my Mini Recce that it’s not even worth showing up.

specs on gun are as follows, Geissele super duty, 14.5 1-7, SSA-E trigger. Optic is bushnell tac elite 1-6.5 on a larue spr mount. Zeroed and doped for 75g hornady 5.56 2750 fps.

All I would need to add is an atlas bipod and some bags from what I understand.

The local club holds matches and I’d like to get involved to quench my competitive spirit since I’ve not been competing in traditional archery much these days.

thanks in advance!

It might work for the gas gun comps, but I think it’d be quite difficult to use in the normal MOST matches. You’d definitely be wanting A little more magnification for the longer targets.

I figured that might be the case. In all honestly I don’t imagine I could reach the competitive level of the other guys based on equipment and time spent behind the gun, but I thought given the nature of those matches it might make for a fun range day albeit with limited success.

could a decent bolt gun e.g. bergara, howa, sig cross, with let’s say a fixed 12 power work or would it need to be a higher mag?
6mm -6.5 would be ideal from what I’ve seen.

Yeah any of those guns would work. You should be fine with 12x for most of the ranges, but it wouldn't hurt to have a little more. Big Piney only goes to 740 or so and 12x would be fine there. Cedar Fork has gas gun matches occasionally, and your 14.5" AR would probably work fine for those. I started with a Savage FCPSR (now tactical) in 6.5 creed with an SWFA 3-15 on it, and I didn't feel handicapped by the gun. I would recommend the 6.5 creed if you decide to get another rifle since the ammo is generally more available and cheaper than 6 creed. Plus barrel life is a little longer. All the MOST guys are really helpful, and they're pretty active on the FB page too if you have questions about matches.

appreciate the info! I’m not far from big piney so I’ll swing by there when they host a match and meet some of the folks. I plan on becoming a member at the new year.

Im contemplating selling an AR and stuff to fund a comp bolt gun or a surefire can for my recce, but until then I’ll have to make do.

Ill look up cedar fork and check them out.

Would something like this howa be ideal? In maybe 6.5 grendel or 6.5 creed?

That would probably work decent, and I would recommend sticking with 6.5 creedmoor. Depending on your budget, I'd look at the Bergara HMR or Tikka CTR ($900-1000) over the Howa since they're generally a little higher quality and have good aftermarket support. Also watch the PX here for good deals. I just built a custom rifle with parts mostly from the PX.

Appreciate the suggestions. Yeah that Howa x MDT gun is like $1000. I’d like to keep the budget around that. That way I could put some extra money into Glass.

I do like bergara, just wish they’d have a sub moa guarantee. Not that they aren’t capable of that, but confidence in equipment goes a long way.

I may just put something together over the next few months. Could be more cost effective, but hurts my instant gratification mentality haha.

No problem! If you're willing to spend 1k, I would highly suggest the Bergara or Tikka then. They both have a 1 MOA or less at 100 yards guarantee too. One extra benefit to the Bergara is that it is compatible with rem700 accessories (stocks and triggers), so you can upgrade stuff you may not like. If you just keep an eye on the PX, you can likely get some solid deals on parts to slowly build.
