I am building a Mega MATEN. The gun is being built because of my experiences with my 18" OBR. I like my OBR and it's a very capable gun. However, with my can attached and the big scope on it, it's a pig that is NOT fun to carry while hunting. I really enjoy hunting with a semi-auto .308 that is suppressed, so I don't want to go back to a bolt gun for Deer/pigs.

I shoot 3-gun also, and the OBR is a bit heavy for that as well.

So, I am planning on building the MATEN and am acquiring parts to do so. I'm about 75% there.

The foundation of this build is a Rainier Arms Select 16" .308 barrel that I already have. I will shoot this gun suppressed MOST of the time if not all of the time. My question is this: Should I chop the barrel to 14.5" to save length and a small amount of weight or should I leave it at 16"? What is the actual MV difference? (I've found that it's around 60 or so fps?) Should I keep it at 16" and if so, why. Other than the extra cost to have it chopped and pinned I'm not seeing a lot of negatives.

The average shots that I have found while hunting are less than 300yds. Longest shot I took in 2012 was on a nice buck at 249yds ranged. 3-gun I have made shots out to 500, but I don't think that will be a problem. (and that would have a different optic setup specifically for that)

The gun will have a CMC 3.5lb trigger, Magpul ACS stock, 13" rail, and will be topped most likely with a Vortex 2.5-10x32 as it will fit the bill mostly. (though, I'd like something with a better objective with a similar weight, and would be open to suggestions on this as well)

Re: 14.5" or 16" .308.

The MV loss will not be much between 14 1/2" & -16"
Give or take 150 FPS

I would be more concerned with unburned powder building up in the baffles of the can.

If you reload, take a look at faster burning powders that will work in your setup

This site does not yet have .308 data but it should help you see how barrell length impacts velocity

Re: 14.5" or 16" .308.

I have a 20" 308 bolt and had 308 ARs in 18" and 16". Velocity difference was minimal between the ARs maybe 30fps on average. 14.5 would be fine for what you are talking about but seems kind of silly to pay 100+ bucks to cut/thread 1.5" off a 250$ barrel to save 2oz.

Powder type I always used varget and never say any benefit for faster powder in shorter barrel.

Re: 14.5" or 16" .308.

Most experts agree that when you go below a 16" barrel in .308, you lose too much in ballistics that you might as well be carrying a lighter gun/lighter caliber such as 7.62x39. Now of course if you are forced to abide by NATO calibers, you don't have that option and the inefficiency of .308 in a shorter barrel doesn't matter as you need round and magazine interchangeability.

That said and coupled with the fact that you'd only be gaining 1.5" in shortness, I'd personally go for the 16".

Have you considered getting your OBR changed to a 16" instead? KAC have said their ECC at 16" shoots the same as their M110 at 20". From what I've seen, the Larue rifles seem about the same accuracy wise so you should see no practical accuracy lost in going to a 16" barrel in your Larue.

Re: 14.5" or 16" .308.

I will put the gun together as a 16" and see how I like it first. Just wondering what to expect or if its worth it.

I want my OBR as an 18". It has rifle length gas and is more than just a hunting gun. It's awesome as is. The new gun is just that, a new gun.

Sounds like a good plan to me
