I've shot 30 cal 155 SMK's and like the accuracy and velocities they deliver. I went to a local shop to order some more and he told me he could get 155g Sierra matchkings or 155g Sierra matchking Palma. Both are hollow point boat tails and looking at the pictures on Midway I don't really see a difference between the 2. The Palma supposedly has a higher BC. So anyone know what exactly is different between the 2? The Palmas are only a buck or 2 more.

Palma has a similar BC to the 155 lapua scenar. Its a good bit higher than the reg. 155hp. You should be able to smoke even the 175's at sane velocities by pushing it at 2900+. I am hoping to try these soon myself.

Re: 155g SMK's reg and palma, whats the difference?

The BCs for the regular 155 Matchking are:
.450 @ 2600 fps and above
.443 between 2600 and 1800 fps
.417 @ 1800 fps and below

For the Palma they are:

.504 @ 2700 fps and above
.470 between 1800 and 2700 fps
.430 between 1500 and 1800 fps
.380 @ 1500 fps and below

For the 175 SMK, they are:

.505 @ 2800 fps and above
.496 between 2800 and 1800 fps
.485 @ 1800 fps and below

Heavier bullets do better.

Lapua 185gr. D-46 FMJ/Rebated Boat Tail, BC G1 (?) .547 and a manageable weight for the .308 Win..

I know they are supposed to have a higher BC but why? what is the difference compared to the regular 155's? Looking at them in pictures I cant really see a physical difference.

uhhh, ya. And cannon balls launched at enough velocity will hit at about the same.

An unfortunate and misleading industry standard.

208 is not an unmanageable weight for the .308, many are doing it, and doing quite well with it. I only have a 20" barrel, and i'm still able to get velocities upwards of 2600fps. I stick with 2500 as it's within' my safety limits.

G1's still have their place, and they are accurate out to 1000 yards for most applications, it's once you get past that where the G5 works better. The difference between G1 and G7 inside of 800 yards is quite small. If all you have to work with is a G1 BC, it's still a fully functioning standard for the time being.

Dude seriously?? Do you work at covertly hiding internet sarcasm? Or are you just a jerk that persists in making douche-like comments leading a newer member in perhaps the wrong direction? It's obvious that you haven't worked with the heavies and don't know the advantages thereof, perhaps you should try a few things before you start knocking them.

G1 is a ballistic coefficient that compares the BC of the bullet your looking at, to that of a standard bullet, it's basically a drag coefficient. it's a number that, when plugged into a ballistic computer, will spit out the drop tables, and velocity tables of that bullet as it travels downrange. That's the quick and dirty, i'm sure Lindy can quite easily give you the more technical description of what it is, he's much more eloquent in his word usage than I.

Re: 155g SMK's reg and palma, whats the difference?

to answer the question, the new 2156 matchking palma has a completely different profile than the old bullet and has been factory "POINTED". in other words, the hollow point has been closed up and uniformed. the old 155 shoots MUCH better in my rifle. if they shoot well, you will definitely notice a difference at distance with the difference in bc. at 550yds. the scenars shoot a little over 1moa flatter than the old 155 sierra or 155 a-max and LOTS flatter than the 175 sierra. pick what your rifle likes best and shoot it since drop is constant and accounted for. drift is going to be much more of an issue. the increased BC will help there as well.

Re: 155g SMK's reg and palma, whats the difference?

The new 2156 bullet has worked very well for me. I have shot them a lot at Camp LeJeune and love them. I'm running them about 3090 fps. The nose is longer (more weight in rear) and the tip is pointed as noted above. For me, accuracy is great and bullet weight is very consistent. When the wind picks up, I still prefer a heavier bullet. At 1000 yards, the impact is identical with the Berger 155.5 running at about 3040 fps.

Re: 155g SMK's reg and palma, whats the difference?

For some of us, we have no choice but shoot the 155 as Palma limits us to 156 or less. The new 155 is much better in the wind than the old 155 but I cannot say its more accurate as the old one hammered pretty darn well. I did use the new 155 at the Canadian Nationals and I think it had something to do with my individual finish and my shooting in the team matches. Figure I only lost 9 pts for the whole week, in some fairly windy conditions, so I think it did fine.

Though, I cant say I wouldnt have liked to use the Berger 155.5 but as I was also shooting on the USA team, I couldnt shoot them then and I didnt want to be switching bullets during the individs vs team matches.

But, I cant say the heavies arent a viable option as I havent really shot enough of them to comment and considering most of my 308 bbls are 1/13 twist, I cant go much more than 175/185 anyhow.

Try the new 155s, you will like them, I think.....same with the 155.5s.

Re: 155g SMK's reg and palma, whats the difference?

+1 on the new 155 palmas, i was turned onto them by the man behind the counter at the range.....he works at the range so he must know whats good right??? hahahhhaha the price was right anyway....

try them out, youll like them id wager, help support the AUSSIE bloke that pumps them out then sends them off to Sierra from his shop in Darwin Australia i am told.!!!!

good luck mate, let us know how you go.
