155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

Re: 155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

i think it was 04 or 05 fclass champion on 6mmbr
his load 43.0 varget/pmc/175shpbt/lap cases and he jumped them
i have shot similar load in 2 rifles...and while slow 2650
it was very accurate...
ive also tried jamming them like sceners ...he was right
they like to jump a little

i agree .1" is worthless unless you can hold that across the course. i cant lol ...and have actually seen few who could

unless your shooting bench 1/2 moa rifle + 1/2 moa wind reading shooter will always win a lesser shooter with a .1+ rifle

I don't know how you guys load so hot. The highest I could get is 45 gr of RL 15 and my primers are completely flat. Too much for me to go any hotter.

Re: 155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

It's hard to tell just from flattened primers that your load is experiencing excessive pressure. (It could mean pressure, it might not). I would pay more attention to primer cratering or a sticky bolt.

I've had some rifles flatten primers and I was well below excessive pressure. But then again, every gun is different.

Re: 155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

My load of 45.7 RE15 would flatten just about any primer. I never had any other pressure signs so i wasnt to worried about it. I watched a 308 flatten primers with a 42.8 grain charge of Varget. Primer flattening isnt the best way to look for pressure.

Re: 155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

I've been thinking alot about pressure signs myself. I've had zero pressure signs on some loads except for extractor marks on the case heads. No cratering, no sticky bolt lift... am I being overly sensitive or are the extractor marks (and they're pretty faint) really a big issue?

That is not really a hot load in 155 scenars. With Varget I get 47.8 gr in the case and send 'em off between 2925 and 2950 in a 24" tube.

{Note: this IS a very stiff load--just inside the sane pressure limits.}

Re: 155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

That scenar load isn't bad. I should have clarified: I get light extractor marks with 45gr of RL-15 in Lap brass with 175gr, .7gr less powder than the sweetheart load for the 175s mentioned earlier.

Re: 155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

I use 47 grains of varget and I'm getting 2899 FPS in a 24" tube. My rifle is a stock FN PBR XP with a fluted barrel, a McMillan A5, etc.

I'm a poor college kid like most here, so I don't get to shoot as much rifle as I'd like, but I've sent enough Scenars and Sierra MKs down range that I'm happy with where I'm at in load development and not yet looking for more.

I use LC brass and load to 2.895". I may work up some mag length loads this summer just to see what my rifle can do, but my chamber is LOOOOONG so we'll just see how she shoots.

I can't wait until the day that I can afford a good, cut rifled, short throat tube like most here. They shoot tighter with less powder and don't need to jump in order to shoot from the magazine. My magazine is about 2.840", which is WAY shorter than my chamber with ANY bullet I've tried, which is par for the course for any factory chamber.

Re: 155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

47.4 of Varget
155 Scenar
Win Brass
Wolf LR Primer
OAL to AICS mag length 2.8 something.
Rem 700 26" Sewer pipe works well 2943 FPS avg.

Actually during testing I ran it up to 47.8gr with a slight crunch only using a 5 inch drop tube.

I know RE15 works well for many also. If you try Varget and are getting too much pressure before about 46.3grains of powder, I'd recommend trying Benchmark if you have some on hand, it works well also and has been consistent and temp insensitive for me as well in other rifles.

I'll have to see what it does after getting my barreled action back from GAP on a Chop &Thread job for my future suppressor. I will work back down to the 45gr area and work up for suppressed loads. With the back pressure I'm guessing my current load wouldn't be very safe.

So, which is it? A poor college kid, or a Veteran? You claim here of being a poor college kid, but in my thread, you claimed to be a Veteran. So, which one is it??????? </div></div>

Are you really sufficiently dense to think that these two things are mutually exclusive?

Whenever you're ready to compare DD-214s, you just let me know, tough guy. And even a complete moron could Google the city in which I live and realize it's a college town.

Re: 155gr Scenar + Varget or R-15?

Rem 700 26"
Norma Brass
CCI BR2 Primer
155 Scenar
W N135 43,8
Cartridge length 2.874
Fps 2855
5 shots at 200 meters 2cm
The rifle has all original, only the trigger Jewell

I'm trying to see how well my rifle likes 155gr Scenars. I've got a decent amount of Varget and R-15 saved up so I'm going do 100 rounds of each and see what the outcome is. What has been your experience using those powders with the 155gr pills? Did you get better accuracy or consistency from one as opposed to the other? Thanks for your help.
I’m getting good groups with 46.5 Gr Varget on 155 Scenar and 165,168 Gr TSX,TTSx Barnes. 44.5 grains ImR 4064 grouped on Scenar too.
