16" 308 gas gun MV and Terminal Ballistics

Hey everyone, so I was wondering what kind of muzzle velocities your getting out of your 16" gas guns and what kind of effects you get on target. I'm probably going to be building a rifle but I would be hunting with it as well and punching paper.

Ive done searches but cant find anything specific for gas guns and what i do find is really old. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated

before anyone suggests a 6.5 or a .260 I'm already all set up for reloading 308 and would prefer not to switch.

My loads get just under 2500 fps at the muzzle.

175 SMK
41.7 gr IMR4064
Fed brass trimmed to 2.005"
Fed 210 primer

My LMT MWS chrono'd 2515 fps with Federal 168 GMM.

Kills the snot out of hogs past 200 yards so far - so I suspect it will kill Ivan, Pedro, Muhammad, Wiley Coyote, Peter Cottontail or Bambi with ease.

Also, its probably pretty easy to get a bit higher MV using a slightly lighter bullet... I'll try some 155s I've got laying around.

haha those sound like acceptable MV to me. kinda what I was hoping to hear. That isn't far off what the ballistic calc says my 20in 308 bolt gun is getting (haven't had access to a chrono)

My POF P308 with 14.5" pinned Rock Creek barrel is getting 2484 with my hand loads.

I was making consistent hits on a 12" steel plate at 800yd this past weekend and a first round hit on a 24" gong at 1000yd

16" OBR with 175 ttsx over 4895. MV 2450 works on elk at 550 yds.

I have pushed a 168 a max to 2550 fps from my SCAR with 41.6 gr of AR Comp SSA cases. That is a warm load, alliant site has 41.7 as their recommended load I worked up to that from 39gr with a magneto speed and .2 increments in a pressure ladder multiple times and it was good to go for me.

Since you asked about terminal performance...both with a 16" DPMS 308.

168gr Prvi HP @ 75yds (MV unconfirmed)


150gr Accubond Handload @ 80yds (MV unconfirmed)

My 16" 308 AR was in the 2450fps range with most match 168 or 175 loads.

Here are some of my MV with commercial loads... This is from a 16" CL LMT barrel. The FGMM were 10 shot averages, the rest were 5.
