16" 308 Vs 16" Grendel

I would like to build a precision AR with a 16" barrel, I dont have a ballistic program so here is my question. I know you can get around 2550 (mk 175) with a 308 and a 16" barrel and I know by Alexander Arms the claim for a 16" Grendel with a 123g Scenar is about 2480 can someone help me compare energy/trajectory/drift from 100-800? Yards or metres, either is ok just need to see if I need to have the heavier gun.

I don’t have any experience with a 16" 308 semi but 2550 seems a little hopeful with 175's, but I’m just a bolt guy, so take that for what you paid for it...

I am doubtful that you can get 2550 fps from a 16" barrel shooting the 175SMK. Just for comparison, my POF 20" shoots about 2600 fps using the 175 SMK, and I am pretty much at the ceiling of the powder curve.

Yea I doubt you'll get over 2500 FPS out of a 16 with the 175's. Through my 18" AR10T I'm getting about 2480 FPS with 44.0 gr RE-15. I could try and work it up a half grain but if velocity was my main concern I would've left the barrel at 24".

BC for 175SMK's is right around .505 (G1) off the top of my head. If the 123's higher it will fly better (in theory).

175's will put more of a hurt on the receiving end at distance though...

My Noveske 18" gives me 2530fps with 118LR and 2480 with BHS 175.
BC for SMK is .496. I went thru the whole Grendel crap before I bought the Noveske. Bottom line. No Grendel is going to make that steel swing like a .308 at any distance. Components are harder to find. and the cost is just as high if not higher than a .308. If you are shooting a 16" as a carbine then there is plenty of surplus ammo you can shoot thru it with a .308. THe grendel needs to be longer than 20" to come close to a .308 which defeats the whole comparasin if you are going compact with a 16"

Thanks guys, the Grendel fly's better all around and stays above 1200 fps to 1000Y per the calculator. I adjusted to the 2480 for the 308. The energy at distance (>700 yards)is comparable. I think I still have to think about it.

My 16" 308 at RO only needs 39MOA to reach 1000 yards with M118LR... but it's not stock.

I have an unregistered nuclear accelerator in the buffer tube.

Whats the specs to that AR10?

my 16'' armalite shoots 175smks @ 2600 with only a slight bit of pressure sign. 2550 is easy mode.

Lowlight sold me the only other nuclear accelerator.

What is your load data? I'm reloading for my MWS currently and would like to know!
