16" JP build at 600 yards..VIDEO

Well there are lots of post asking "will a 16" or 18" barrel shoot out to X distance"...so I took my 16" JP VTAC upper build and hit the range.

I was shooting some hand loads...77gr SMK's over RL-15...and decided to try 600 yards.
This is the first time I have shot this rifle past 300 yards. The wind was blowing pretty good and I was holding into pretty good.

I was able to put five rounds on steel with very little effort. Sorry for the bad timing...there was some gents hammering away next to me but you can see all the hits and hear most of them.

Stan I too have been shooting the 77's at 600 yards through a 18" 1/7 AR SPR and it hits with no problem. They are very impressive. [img:center]http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/9431/fk9.mp4[/img]

Oh ya, gotta 16 inch DPMS ive had to 800 at pretty much the same elevation as my bolt gun.

We already did that....see video below.

Yep...the JP's really are sweet shooting rifles. With the adjustable gas block, muzzle brake, and low mass bolt carrier group and buffer....it really makes the recoil impulse next to nothing.

Need to find something like that down where I am (Auburn). We used to have a really good little private one but it ended up being shut down.

Sac Valley is pretty nice I just wish I could find another private one w/a door charge to keep out the riffraff type of thing.

I have a 14.5 inch JP and mine shoots well out to 600 on steel with the 73gr match Berger bullet. A 5 shot 100 yds group attached.

What altitude are you at on that range? And if you know what FPS are you shooting the 77gr. rounds at?

Thanks. I have a 16" Noveske Recon that I have shot at 565 yards no problem, But I tried to get on target with same gun and rounds at 1K and I could not manage. I run 60gr. Hornady TAP .223 ammo.

I have some Black hills 77 grain white box ammo that I want to try out. But I think being in Florida, altitude is working against me...

Looks like some good fun. Have you gotten a chance to try the 75 grain hornady bthp? I use these in my 15.4" Wilson build but have given thought to tryin the 77's. The 75's fly great out to 600 for me but always lookin for better results.

Hi Jack.
The range elevation is 818'. So not that high really. Right at 2650 fps is what I am getting out of the 16". I get 2775 or there abouts out of the 20" JP with the same load.

I have never tried the Hornady 75's. I was thinking about trying some in my Tikka bolt rifle as I am using AI mags with it and have LOTS of room to seat them out far.

Try the 70 gr Berger VLD you should be good at 2650fps out to about 850.

If you've got the real estate in the mag, go 80 gr. VLD and be done with it.

I shoot the same basic load - 77gr SMK over 24.0 grains of RL 15 in a Winchester case and Rem 7 1/2 primers - but I'm not getting the MV you are, out of my 18" Noveske SPR. I'm closer to 2600, but the load does shoot with excellent accuracy and precision - I have had it out to 895 yds, banging steel every shoot. Would you mind telling us the powder charge and case/primer combo you are using?

77 gr. SMK's seated at 2.26" (mag length).

What twist is your barrel? Mine are both 1:8 twist and the chamber is a Wylde.

My Noveske has a 1:7 twist (polygonal rifling) and Noveske's proprietary chamber, the Mod0 Match (or something like that). They say the chamber is designed for the 77gr SMK and it sure shoots them great, but I would like a bit more MV to flatten it out a bit. I was getting zero pressure signs at 24.5gr RL15, a load I abandoned because the 24.0gr was perhaps 0.25moa more accurate. Maybe I will do a batch at 24.3gr and put it on the chrono.

To the guys discussing the 80grainers: no way you can safely load them mag length, although single loading them, just touching the lands, produces 308 Win bolt-gun like results (very similar ballistics to the 168gr SMK). Good luck!

I think your velocity is due to your twist. I have no scientific data to back that up...but I have noticed that the rifles I have loaded for when everything else is the same...barrel length,powder charge,bullet weight,etc. That a slower twist will shoot faster then the faster twist. Just from my way of thinking the slower twist "should" have less drag. Just my thoughts and observations.

Maybe someone with some knowledge about this can chime in.

Actually it can. You use a non-standard mag though. Highpower/Service Rifle guys have been doing it for years.
