168 smk loads for the Garand

A very good freind loves his Garands. He normaly shoots mill surp. He has asked me to load him some 168's but I have no data for the Garands. Any of the Garand shooters here have a pet load for 168s in the Garand they will share

47.5gr of IMR4895, Lake City Cases, CCI BR Primers, and 168 SMK. Don't have the velocity info right here with me.

From the NRA Garand reprint, and I selected/specify IMR4064 from experience:

147/150gr Bullets, 50.0gr IMR-4064
165/168gr ", 48.0gr IMR-4064
173/175gr ", 47.0gr IMR-4064

I have tested each, they cycle well, and shoot nicely.

42 gr of RL15 worked well in my M-21

Surpriseing, I use 43 grains of R 15 in my 308 bolt gun.
41 grains R 15 in my Fals. Seems light for a 30/06 but you fellows that shoot Grands know best.

m21 is a scoped accurized m14 (308 not 30-06)

Thanks pacomdiver I am not very familiar with M 14's or Garands for that matter. Just build custom FAL's and Bolt Guns
Does anyone load for Garands useing R 15 or R22. I use R 22 for My 30/06 bolt gun and have this on hand. Also have some 4895 pull down.

Dunk...Do NOT use RL22 for the Garand. You'll bend the operating rod. 4895 and 4064 speed powder is what it is designed for. RL 15 may be okay. I'd do what Greg and Witt specified.

You can use powder as fast as 3031, too.

I recommend 47.5 4064 in the 168-SMK loads. It got me to Camp Perry my one and only time (so far...)

In looking for powders I can only find Varget available.
Can this be used in place of IMR 4895.
